I currently have a canon 430EX II flash and am looking to add a 2nd flash to my gear. I was looking into picking up the new 430EX III, but wanted to know if it offers any real advantages being combined with the older model 430EX II that I already have. For any off camera flash usage I use a E-TTL cable or a pair of YONGNUO flash triggers, and at one point I was using the canon built in pop wireless trigger system on my 7D until I realized the cycle time between pictures is slow due to over heat protection. Should pick up the newer 430EX III or would older 430EX II and cheaper model be best for my current gear. My current body is the Canon 7D mark II if that helps.

The 430exIII is a completely different communication system.

To be honest, I think before you pick a flash, you should decide on a triggering system. That'll then lead you to a suitable flash.

For the price of one Canon 430EX3 you can buy two Yongnuo YN685 flashes, a YN622C-TX controller, and a YN622C-II trigger (the latter to fire your 430EX2).

For about $60 more you could get two YN600EX-RT flashes, a YN-EX-RT controller and YN-EX-RX receiver.

The difference is that the YN600-RT/YN-EX-RT are fully compatible with the Canon 600EX-RT/ST-E3-RT RF wireless system and supports up to 5 flash groups, while the YN622 stuff is a proprietary RF system supporting only three flash groups. Both will allow you to change flash settings remotely and perform manual or full ETTL auto exposure controls of the Yongnuo flashes and the 430EX mounted on a trigger/receiver.

yup.

if you go with Canon, plan to stick with Canon. Not that you can't mix and match, but at this point you are paying a premium for Canon, not just for the name, but for their communication system for multiple flashes.

For the price of a one 430EXIII you can pick up 2 Godox TT685's, a Godox X1 TTL transmitter as well as a Godox X1 receiver to run your 430EXII . Now you have a real flash setup: a 430EXII for your "on camera" flash needs and for "off camera" you have a full TTL 3 flash setup.

Edit: With the Godox 2.4G wireless system you can grow into larger HSS/TTL flashes such as the AD360II and AD600B plus you have easy integration of any of their many other flash products. Both Canon wireless systems are dead ends and Yongnuo well?

Where do you recommend purchasing the Godox flashes?

Look on Amazon.
Adorama has an OEM version, or soon will.

I think Cheetah Stand will offer them as well.

I never recommend where to buy anything as that has gotten me in trouble in the past. I make a recommendation, then someone has a bad experience and now some how that is my fault. I will post links to sellers when I find a good deal or when something is hard to find (buyer beware). I buy from everybody, where ever I can get a good deal and good service. When it comes to sellers I always try to be fair and impartial. Equipment and Manufacturers now that is a different story.

My recommendation is to always buy from someone you trust and who will take care of you if an issue arises.

I have two of the YN622C transceivers and they work well with my 430exII

Just to add, I also have the YN622C, 4 of them, and the YN622C-TX. I use them with 2-430EXII, 1-Shanny SN600SC, and a Flashpoint Rovelight. With the Rovelight the triggers will only allow firing, not any adjustments. It has it's own remote for that.

Yes the YN transceivers are nice.

I use: 580EX II, 2x 430EX II, 2x 270EX II, YN-622cTX, 4x YN-622C, 70D and 6D. I've never had a problem with anything in this setup. (I don't use it all at one time!)
