Hello everyone,

First of all, if this is in the wrong section I apologize. I have been looking around for a similar thread, but could not find one that matches my question.

I am currently working on a banner for a website and need images that have a 1920x300px ratio. I wanted to try and make this banner using my own images, but I was wondering if there is a way to take photos in 1920x300px size? If not, what would be the best way to go about re-sizing images to the desired size? Please excuse my question if it seems dumb, I'm not too familiar with photography at the moment, but I am trying to get better. If it helps at all, I have a Canon 60D with a 10-22mm lens.

What program are you using to create the banner? No need to try to take the photos in that size. You simply need to crop the image to that ratio and then save at the 1920px by 300px size. Most programs can do this, but it varies how to do it depending on which program you are using.

I am going to suggest you to resize the image after taking the shot. Are you familiar in Photoshop editing? If not then you can try this website http://picresize.com (external link) as well.

You are not going to be able to take or resize your image (a whole image) to that size. If you try to resize an image to 1920x300 the aspect ratio will be so squished the items in the image will be bizarre. When creating banners for any website - your own, twitter, pinterest, and so forth - the best thing to do is to search for (or take) an image where the subject content in such a thin slice of the image is usable. Then crop that section out and use it. You can crop a section out of an image and resize a little, but probably not much.

Do not think about creating your banner in terms of "resizing" but rather "cropping."

Another way to go is stitching multiple photos together to make a long panorama with software such as Microsoft ICE, then crop/resize to your desired size.

Resize the image (maintaining the aspect ratio) to get 1920 pix on the longer side. Then only crop the shorter side to reduce it to 300 pix.

If you use photoshop, there is a very easy way to do this. Select the cropping tool, put 1920px in the horizontal box, and 300px in the vertical box. Then crop the photo as you want the banner to be, and viola, you have what you want. Very simple and does everything in one step.

Are you familiar with the various search engines available on the internet and the treasure trove of information that they provide...

In Lightroom you would do this by setting a custom crop ratio (6.4:1), cropping the image and then exporting at the desired pixel size. I use it all the time for doing Facebook cover images.
