Gonna necro this thread: My MP-E 65mm broke for the third time. I placed an order for a new one this morning, and when it arrives I'm gonna get an RMA number from Canon and use the box that the new lens came in to send the old one to Canon for repair. At least this way I'll have a spare MP-E.

Down to the EF-S 60mm + tubes, which isn't a bad combination. It's just not the MP-E.

Knowing my luck Canon will either announce a refresh or come out with a version for the RF mount.

Just curious, what keeps breaking?

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Canon's MP-E 65mm macro lens has a ribbon cable that connects the aperture assembly to the electrical contacts on the lens. With repeated use, because the cable bends back and forth as you turn the magnification ring, that cable will break causing the following symptoms:

  • You'll hear a "crunching" noise, kinda like metal scraping against metal (probably the aperture blades not moving in unison and binding up).
  • "Error 01 , communication between camera and lens faulty. Clean lens contact" will be displayed on the LCD.
  • Changing the magnification ring may temporarily "fix" the problem. At some magnifications the lens might work, and at others it might not. Or the lens will just fail hard with the Error 01 message on the LCD.

My copy of the lens is 13 years old, and it's always on my camera so it gets a lot of use.

Not much danger of a new model, more likely to stop making it altogether.

I would love a lighter new model with auto focus!

That's completely a different lens. The MPE is more or less a bellows in a tube shape. :)

Ok I would like a lens that does 1-5 Mag and has auto focus! Surely it must be possible in theory. If 10% of the population wanted this I think it would exist.

    I'd be happy with 1:2 to 4:1

Either they will discontinue it, or if there is a refresh it will be for the RF mount. Laowa is putting pressure on Canon, and it's gonna be interesting to see how it plays out.

No you wouldn't. The camera will never be "smart enough" to place the area of acceptable focus where it really needs to be, even at 1x. The only reason why my single frames have so much depth is because I'm twisting my wrists to lay the depth over as much of the subject as possible. Kind of a limited tilt shift effect, and no normal AF is going to be able to replicate what I'm doing with my hands. Example image taken at almost 5x and F11:

Agreed. Or a reversed lens on a variable length extension tube.

I think that there is space for a 1/3 to 3x with no infinity focus. But both lenses would be manual focus only.

Oh bad luck, I guess if the MP-E is a near 100% usage it is worth blowing cash on a second one.

How long are you getting between repairs (time and/or shots taken)?
