i subscribe to a speedlite (primarily) portrait photographer on youtube who linked aNOTHER speedlite portrait photographer who had a technique i thought id give a try.

it would have been 1000's times better if it wasnt ME in the picture but a) my wife doesnt like having her picture taken and b) shes at work...

I like your expression in the second shot, Lt. Dave. You should be in a movie.

Original instructions are:

a 40" something softbox with a single speedlite on full power
a 20"x30" black foamcore board hung over the front of the softbox
camera settings 1/200ss, f8.0, ISO 100 shoot in B/W

the foam core serves as the background, the softbox has enough bare diffuser to bleed light around the foam core for the simulated rim lighting

i substituted a 60" shoot through umbrella with a 3-speedlite head (for full lighting coverage) had to go to f9.0 and shot in color, converted to B/W in LightRoom. i did nothing to adjust the final image except to add 1/2 stop in exposure for the final image. might have benefited from some contrast or better processing...

in the Original, the photographer used his beautiful wife. i only had me.... sorry guys!

Interesting - aside from the technical stuff, you are giving us a glimpse into your world. I like pictures that record everyday life. Which in time will become history.

Photographers are violent people, first they frame you, then they shoot you and after that they hang you on the wall.
