I often wonder what is the target market of this lens, when there is a cheaper and proven option already available in the name of 24-105 f4L IS USM. If you are comfortable with used, you can often find near new 24-105 going for 400-500.

I have this lens and I love it. Probably the sharpest lens I own. Also the macro mode has eliminated the need for me to carry extension tubes.

I produce some great images at wedding receptions with on camera flash. Got it used about a year ago maybe a little less. I love the focal range so much the only thing I would consider replacing it with is the 2.8 version.

"To the 24-70 f/4L IS's advantage are smaller size and lighter weight, but I don't find these differences to be of great significance. More important to me is that the 24-70 L has less distortion, especially at 24mm. A strong advantage the 24-70 IS has is the very-impressive-for-a-zoom-lens macro capability. A 0.70x maximum magnification from a non-true-macro lens is eye-opening (more later)." - The Digital Picture
