My first pan.

My son's 21st birthday present.
No, not the car.
6 laps in the Lambo.
First time panning.
Started at 1/60 and they were terrible.
Tried 1/100 & 1/160.
The 1/100 shots looked best, and the keeper rate was dismal as you could imagine, but I got this one.

Great birthday present! I'll be he had a blast. But, now he has "the taste."

My panning with fast cars is about a 10% keeper rate at 300 or 400mm. I don't know if that is good or bad.

Better than mine, right now it is about 0%.

At over $200K for that car, "the taste" doesn't matter.
My keeper rate was horrible.
That 1 shot was the best out of a few hundred I got during the laps, but I also got some video which cut down on attempts.
It was a lot of fun.
The guys that sold this "exotic car experience" were great.
The guy in the car with him coached him the entire time, telling him where to hug or loosen curves, shoot for the cones in the curves, slowing, gunning, shifting, etc. I have an in-car video they also gave us.

That's not a bad image for the first time panning, & how many do you need, anyway? ; )

How many do you need?
It depends on how many it took to get the first!
Hundreds of blurry shots...
I consider myself very lucky, and glad I at least have one to consider printing.

Who was it that said, "Getting there is half the fun!"? Looking at the images for the first time is kind of like Christmas morning for me. ; )

Might be true, but I had to go through a lot of smeared shots to find that one.
It was so hard looking at them on the back of the camera in daylight to decide on shutter setting changes.

Good first effort. What is the old adage: Practice, Practice, and more Practice. Teaching your body to pan a camera well is not that dissimilar from learning a golf or tennis swing. And look at the huge amounts of time and money spent on coaches for those two skills. There are many variables that you must anticipate (acceleration, deceleration, turning, etc.) and then match them well. Most of that is just gained through experience. After focusing (sorry) on motorsports for over 7 years, my keeper rate is probably about 40%, but that also depends on the kinds of vehicle and how slow I want to set the shutter. Keep at it and enjoy the journey.
