Those are pretty soft, however I think the issue isn't so much the lens as a front focusing issue. In all the owl shots, I can see the grass in front being in focus more than the owls. Not sure if you have any other bodies that might allow focus adjustments, but if so, I would try that lens on those bodies.

The owls photo was taken on a Canon EOS 400D (which I no longer use) the others on my Canon 7D MK II. How do I change it on my 7D MK II?
Is this a good advice to follow?

Although saying that I know someone who uses the 400D and might use my tamron with so any advice would be useful.

The easiest way to do a test is to get access to some flat grassy yard/park somewhere, and put a brightly colored small object, like a yellow ball, or something in the grass. Back up enough so that you get the object just covering the center AF point. Take a few shots focused on that object.

Note where the grass is in focus around that object. If the grass all around the object is fine, then you are good. If the grass is in front, then add +values. If the grass is in focus behind, put in - values.

Repeat a few times tweaking your values until you can get the grass right next to the object in focus.

I have been MFA'ing for years, and I used this technique for band competitions, sports, etc. It works very well, and is very quick. I do this every shoot just to make sure I didn't inadvertently mess up a setting, etc during the off season.

If I am at home doing MFA, then I use my focus genie tool that I developed.

You can use ordinary stuff outside, like TeamSpeed pointed out. It'll work for the most part, if you have enough depth of field.

If you're a total perfectionist or just like gadgets, here's an example of something you can pick up that is an aid for MFA adjustments: LINK

Not super cheap, but also not crazy expensive (some are stupid costly).

Teamspeed, like your yellow ball idea. I bought LensAlign ll but struggle with it. Plus settings, minus settings and all in between look the same to me. If my dog will let me use her tennis ball, I'll give it a go.

Hey Rog sorry for the late reply Sigma was not out yet when I got the Tamron. And I got my lens back the other day and I am really really happy with the fix they did. Tamron rocks.

Was going to pm, but decided this may be good general info. Was there a charge for their service and will future purchases of this lens have the problem addressed?? Tamron may not have shared any such info with you. Whatever you can add and thank you so much!

Hey Rog the Tammy comes with a 6 year warranty so no worries there. They seem to be very customer friendly, I bought mine when it first came out and have had zero problems with it. I did send it in for a firmware update and it came back quickly and they cleaned it to boot! The Sigma seems like a nice lens also.

Craig, thanks for chiming in. Good to hear all sides. Just read another review and summed up the 2 lenses were basically even but gave the edge to Sigma at the long end. See that Adorama is now including the dock free. So...

Well whichever lens you end up with I'm sure you will be happy. Either will serve you well.
