Hello, I am looking to getting a ND filter for my 85 1.2 so I can shoot at 1.2 in bright daylight. I was thinking of getting the Tiffen Variable ND. Are there any cons with going with a variable filter? I shoot both video and photos.

Any recommendations would be helpful. =]

I've never shot with a variable nd; from what I've heard, they tend to have issues with pretty extreme color casting. Not sure about sharpness, but the latter is probably less important at video resolutions.

Tiffen is a cheap brand and variable ND technology is quite demanding. Why use an expensive prime with cheap filters?

It's like buying a Ferrari and outfitting it with 165x14 tires...

Seriously now, I experimented with a Circular polarizer and a variable ND filter from another cheap brand. The CPL worked like a champ. In the variable ND, it's ok up to 2 stops and then the dreaded X started showing up. You can peruse my album on ND by going to the outside link of the photo below. You have to identify and disregard the vignetting of the EF 24-70L MkII

This is 6 stops:

This is no filter (ideally, the photos should be identical):

In my opinion, you should not expect markedly better performance from the Tiffen Vari-ND.

A quality 3 stop ND is what you should be looking for. Variables will preform much worse for the money. 3 stops will get you to f/3.5 which should bring your shutter speeds into a reasonable range.
