I have the above but am confused at how to use 3 filters in it? The first slot closet to the lens hardly holds the filter properly, the filter is so loose, the second and third slots out work fine. So perhaps this unit is assembled wrong somehow?

Can someone help here?

Thanks

The closest slot to the lens is for the round filters, such as polarizers. The other two slots (further out) are for the rectangular/square sheet filters that slide up and down.

Each Cokin system has it's own polarizer(s) that work with the respective holder. You can't use a screw-in polarizer with the holder, unless you screw it in behind the mount ring.

It's something like 103mm and doesn't have threads. It has a flat flange on the outside that slips into the closest slot. Singh-Ray and some others also make a compatible filter for the system.

The best thing that you can do is get a copy of the Cokin reference book/catalog. It shows you all the filters, their ID numbers, and what they do. There are multiple systems, A/P/Z/X, so be sure that you look at the right section for the Z system.

Here's a shot of how the filter mounts: http://www.2filter.com/cokin/cokinzpro.html (external link)

You have to use a kind of drop-in polariser like this one: http://www.bhphotovideo.com …der_68_031144r_4_x_4.html (external link)

B+W used to make a Kaesemann version but they seem to have discontinued it.

So it appears that only 2 rectangle filters can be used with this holder and those are the outer 2 slots?

I use the closest slot for my Big Stopper (it's got foam light sealing, which makes it thicker than the normal filters), but for that I had to reverse the pins that hold the adapter ring so that they can be flush with the outer face of the filter holder, otherwise they'd scracth the foam and maybe even the filter.

At length, yes, you can only use the two outermost slots; which, in a sense, it's fine, since too many filters in front of your lens would degrade the picture quality. There might be a way for you to buy the parts to add a new slot: the screws look long enough to accept just one more piece. You'd have to check Cokin's web site and documentation to see if this is a viable option.

Yes, the two outer ones are for rectangular - the inner only for circular. Be careful, the larger the stack, the more prone to flare because of the plate filters. Be sure to shade the stack with a hood, hat, or flag! Plate filters flaring isn't always noticeable until later when it seems that contrast is very low and the shadows just aren't black enough.
