Are there any tricks to MFA a lens on the T1i?

My boys and I are doing an equipment shuffle, and I'm not sure which one of the boys will get the 50 f/1.4. The 50 f/1.4 requires a significant MFA on the 70D and the 6D bodies I have.

The 70D is going to my eldest son (22 years), and my eldest son is passing the T1i he's been using onto my youngest son (7 years).

I'm not sure if I should try to convince #1 son to pass the 50mm 1.8 on to #2 son in exchange for the 1.4, or if we can sort out any issues the 1.4 might with focussing on the T1i.

The 1.4 has such a lousy reputation that I think it might be hard to convince #1 son to take it in exchange for the 1.8 (he's a compulsive review reader like his mother  ). My 1.4 does work well and reliably with the MFA. I might have to give #2 son my 40 pancake, but I'm not quite ready to part with that lens.

No Rebel to date has the AFMA ability that is found in the 50D, 70D, 1D series, 6D, 5D2+ series or 7D series.

That being said, I would suggest selling the 50 1.4, then buying the 50 1.8 STM. You should actually have cash left over and won't have any issues with who will take what.

I realize that Rebels don't natively have the feature . . . but I don't know if there is a way to circumvent it. Something that can be done to the camera or maybe even the lens?

Nothing to the camera I wouldn't think, unless there is Magic Lantern capabilities for focus adjustments opened up for the T1i.

There isn't much you can do with the lens either. It is a very cheaply made lens, and I could help you fix it if it were sticking or jamming up when focusing, but nothing I can think of would alter its focusing, the camera tells the lens where to focus, and the lens moves the motors to accommodate the focusing commands.

Thank you. :)

I figured it was a long shot, but that it was worth asking about: so I could have a plan of action mapped out.

I don't know if there is an issue with the lens on the T1i, but #1 son is at school and I don't want to venture into his room to get the T1i to find out (whatever I may see in there that I really don't want to see wouldn't be something I could "unsee").

I'm running out of lenses to thin-out, and #2 son will need something.

Again, perhaps sell the 50 1.4? You would have enough cash to buy a 50 1.8 STM, and see who fights for that? :)

You would have enough to get either the 18-55 STM or 55-250 STM too perhaps, or very close to it. Turning one older seemingly troublesome lens into 2 newer good lenses for very little cash outlay might be beneficial in the long run for fostering the love of photography.

The 50 STM and the 55-250 are both great ideas. #2 son would get it. #1 son already has a pile of lenses that I've passed down to him (and he's being a bit stingy about passing lenses on to his little brother without getting something in return). He has all of my old EF-S lenses plus my old EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 (which isn't actually that old, and is a great lens).

#2 son does have my old EOS-M with the EF-M 18-55, and he's become quite adept at it. He's getting the Rebel mostly so I can teach him how to use BBAF, get him comfortable with a DSLR viewfinder, and learn how to choose focus points.

Ohhhh . . . maybe my 100mm Macro would work well on the T1i? I hardly ever use it (I didn't buy the "L" and I should have bought the "L"), and child produced macro shots might be fun. :)

Great idea on the macro... great way to build up interest by allowing them to get in really close with flowers, bugs, etc. :)

There is something about kids thinking it funny to take closeups of spiders then showing their aunt or grandparent, hearing them exclaim, "oh gross, get that out of here". :D

I just tried to see if I could order it . . . It won't recognize my Canon Canada login information, and it won't let me create an account with a Canadian address.

I think I came across a potential home for the 50 1.4 . . . on an old Rebel G I found in a box of forgotten gear! I didn't know we still had the thing. It was #1 son's first SLR. I've now absconded with it.

I'll buy some nice Ilford film, we'll set aperture at f/8+ (hope for the best) and have some fun. :) #2 son has never gone through the process of dropping film off to be developed and then dealing with the anticipation of waiting for days to get prints. If the focus is good, we have a new toy!

 #2 son's favourite place in the whole world is the butterfly garden at the zoo. I think he'd get a lot of use out of the macro lens.

Strangely, we don't have many spiders here. We really don't have any scary ones: unless we go out to the badlands to try to find Black Widows or to a pet store to try to shoot tarantulas.

We do have very large and fat dew worms though. Those are suitably gross.

Oh shoot, I should have looked at your location, sorry about that.

Great idea about the film camera, I have some coworkers that have started to go back to film. It's funny how people really just want change in their life, and not just something better each time. We get into a groove with certain technologies and ideas, and then find it interesting to go back to old ways of doing things simply because they are different or more interesting to try out.

We ourselves have just recently completely rid ourselves of teflon and other non-stick cookware and went to cast iron, the original "non-stick". I love cast iron, its costs are low, it's virtually indestructible, I can use metal utensils, and food comes out awesome. If my grandparents were still living, they would just shake their head... :)
