I'd just started a post (quoting another post) so I was surprised to get a warning "PREVIEW NOTICE: idiot: You used the word idiot..."

In context, the original post was somewhat self deprecating, and talking about buying "idiotically expensive lenses", but I accept it's not trivial to code logic to detect the nature of use. However, as the text was within a

block it's obviously not the words of the current poster (i.e. me).

Would it not make sense to disable the parsing for quoted text?

Camera, some lenses, too little time, too little talent

I don't think so. (unless I am missing your meaning)
If the filter takes out a word we don't want to see on the forum for whatever reason, then we would not want it to show right back up in a quote. (just my P.O.V.)

The wording of the "PREVIEW NOTICE" is the part that makes a quoted situation notice seem out of place. Not the filter itself IMHO.

So is the preview notice inseparable from the filter? That is, is it impossible to disable the notice for filtered words in a quote but still filter them?

It's "just" code, so any combination of behaviour would be possible. I guess it would make sense if the preview warning indicated that the problem word was in quoted text.

It's also interesting it grepped "idiot" from "idiotically". I hope it doesn't flag up Scunthorpe ;)

Quoting your last sentence doesn't bring forth the preview warning. The warning has come up for similar letter combinations when I typed "brush it off" or something, I forget what. Not recently, though. Maybe the filter was adjusted sometime.

I've just had an amusing minute; typing rude words into a reply, and can confirm the filter is working, but "idiot" doesn't seem to be flagged any more in a quote. Great. Now I can insult loads of people ;-)a

(Strangely, it doesn't pick it up above in a reply when in quotes, but if I use it without quotes it does).
(Oh wait... and now it doesn't! Maybe it's just gotten bored of my immaturity...)

Indeed.

Sadly I can't find a reference, but there was a story some years ago about a TV p*rn blocker that would blank the picture if it detected large amounts of skin tones. Apparently it would consistently block clips of Murray Walker (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murray_Walker (external link)) talking to camera
