Not sure what you mean by "BW or white", but of the two photos presented I would pick the first one.

i prefer the b/w but i dont think the backdrop is helping these images at all. they should be shot at night or against a black backdrop.

knowing star wars and this character, I'm having a hard time with the sunny backdrop.

IMO, edit it with a stylized color that's reminiscent of the environments in which you'd find the character. Think about the movie scenes in which he appeared.

For shots like this, the "correct" or "neutral balanced" color is boring and a little disappointing. Do something interesting with it.

Maybe desaturate and cool off the white balance, and add a blue tint to the whole thing - remember the fight scene in the snow? OK, he wasn't wearing his helmet in that scene, but that's the sort of color/look that I would probably go for.

The b&w gets my vote. :)

I do think I might to see something a bit more low-key, though. And, I would love to see the rest of the costume.

I also like the color, but the purple reflection in the chrome is a bit distracting.

I prefer it in color, but would do something like this with it. If you want me to remove my edit, please let me know.

There ya go, that's just about what I was envisioning too. Now you have a movie villain, not just a guy in costume at the park.

As for the white marks on the mask - those are sometimes intentional, marks of weathering or battle damage. As paint gets scuffed off in battle, the metal underneath will show through. That's probably the intent of those, though I think they could have been more realistically modeled, such as putting silver highlighting along the edges of the existing gouges.

The strict costuming requirements of the 501st don't mention anything about battle damage on that part of the mask, though they do call out battle damage on other areas of the helmet. http://databank.501st.com/databank/Kylo_Ren (external link)

I think cloning them out worked fine, but they didn't really bother me.
