New lens = New Damage (70-200mm f/2.8L IS II)

So, my latest purchase and myself had a little accident in which I slipped and fell with my 70-200 at my side (had the Black Rapid Slim dual strap on) and in turn dented the filter ring...

To my suprise, there seems to be no damage to the front element or any of the glass inside, focuses fast and accurately and still produces sharp images. I'll be checking the IS shortly through the video modes on my 5D.

Another suprise was that my equipment insurer, being Photoguard... Apparently they do not cover scratches or dents which I am majorly disappointed in.

What options do I have? I understand that it can go to Canon but I really don't want to fork out their costs considering I can source a replacement part for £100... Or do I go to an independent camera/lens repairer? Would it be worth contacting Photoguard regardless?

Granted it seems minuscule, but when you've just forked out £1500 at a young age... It's a killer lol

I don't know enough about the lens construction and whilst it may operate normally I'd be concerned about it's resistance to dust and moisture.
If it were me, I'd bite the bullet and get canon to fix it, peace of mind and all that.

Also, if you want to fit a filter it does not look like that's going to happen.

Probably time to change your insurer.

I was desperately trying to take off the filter on my 24-105 to try and straighten it out... Couldn't take the damn thing off! Aha But I agree on the dust and moisture thing... I live in a building made in the 1600's... Dust just forms like crazy here.

Maybe biting the bullet would be worth it this time round... But we'll see... Would it be worth calling Photoguard?

Does anyone know if the AF noisey whilst focussing in live view?

I have noticed slightly more af chatter in live view with all my lenses so I'm not sure that's an issue.

I had my 5D ii and 85mm returned for adjustment through the London Camera Exchange in Portsmouth.
To my surprise they do not go to canon UK but a service agent approved by canon.
It did cost but was worth it.

If that were my lens I'd have it repaired through Jessops or the likes. Also it will maintain it's future value should you decide to change or upgrade.

I see where you're going with the photoguard thing.
I don't consider that to be a scratch or a dent as you cannot use it fully without the ability to affix a filter. In other words, it no longer works as designed.

I'd tear Photoguard a new one if I were you.

I am now looking at doing the service through Calumet (who I purchased the Lens off of) and Intotally agree with you.

That's something I didn't think of in regards to filter use... As you say, I cannot fix a filter onto the front therefore it's not usable. I'll be calling Photoguard up in the morning. My main concern through them though is that they state "new for old" in their policy... Where I'm guessing they'd take my 7 day old lens and replace it with a refurbished lens...

But I shall call to clarify and to see what they can do.

The only time I ever claimed, they sent me jessops vouchers to the value of the item.
Quite cool really but I think my policy states.....Beyond economical repair or lost/stolen.

Somewhere under Bognor pier is a Hasselblad 501 if anyone wants it.

Well they asked me to get a replacement cost from more than one dealer. It just happened that jessops was cheaper at the time.

Update: after a quick chat on the phone with Photoguard, they will be going through with helping me out! All I need is a repair estimate that Calumet photo have kindly offered to give me free of charge too!

I'll keep this thread updated with Photoguard's progresses as well as Calumet just incase anyone else has to deal with a similar matter!

I lost my camera, tripod and lens off a 200' cliff recently to the tune of $5k. it aint so easy for an old guy either but shite happens man

I nearly dropped a lens into the Thames on New Years Eve. I nearly had a heart attack

If you have any Canon warranty left this will void it.
I have done this several times before in my career. I find it best to just send it to Canon CPS and have it checked out. But I needed mine for my job as it depended upon them working correctly.

I would also look for a different insurer.
