External camera Ipad seen as Native?

This is a weird question for everybody. I have a client who is a plastic surgeon whom I am working with that is having an issue. Since I have expertise in photography, I figured I could maybe try and find an option.

He utilizes his Ipad (newest air model) to capture images of his clients via a specialized program so it is part of their medical record. He is not happy with the quality of the pictures as their is no flash on the ipad.

He is looking to put some sort of external camera directly onto the ipad that is viewed as a native camera for the ipad. Now the catch is, the program does not have a "watched" folder so to speak. The program will not auto-import from the camera roll. I know there are camera adapters which will import the pictures to the Camera Roll of the Ipad. But, again, the software he utilizes does not autoimport.

Is there such a beast that will plug into an ipad, and be viewed as a native camera on the ipad? Please advise.

Software is Nex-tech he utilizes if that helps.

Thanks in advance!

You say the solution he has doesn't watch/import from the camera roll, so how *do* the images he currently takes get imported?

I'd tackle this from a slightly different angle. Figure out if the system can be hooked up to a dSLR and then connect the camera and iPad via CamRanger for use as a remote screen/viewfinder

My understanding is that the program "takes the picture" and saves it to the clients file. The program has a built in camera app utilizing the on board apple camera.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....totally misunderstood the setup. Unfortunately, no, I do not believe there is any way to substitute an external camera for the built-in one.

According to their web page http://www.nextech.com/photo-management (external link)

Images import directly from a digital camera or iPadĀ®

Probably need to replace the iPad with a laptop

Simplest solution with less kludging is to get him to buy some LED light panels and light up the subject. Why make it more difficult than it needs to be? It's amazing what proper light will do with an iPad or phone camera.

I would agree with going with adding proper lighting to the equation rather than an external camera setup. The iPad's camera is not the best or easiest to use tool, but it is far more than enough to produce very high quality photos suitable for ID purposes.

Getting some off camera lights setup would do wonders for the quality of the image, where as attaching a different camera to the ipad will leave him with a similar looking image in the same bad lighting he is working with.

Not if that camera has a flash.

True, an on camera flash would probably make the photos look even worse.

Yeah, I actually agree with the idea about lighting. Its not the camera that's the problem. Its the lighting.

This. Even something simple like telling him to keep a small LED flashlight near the iPad to use as a fill light would be a good solution in my opinion.

Thanks everybody. He does have a simple 4 light led thing he straps to the side of his ipad. Sounds like that is not bright enough. But yeah, that was the solution I was thinking off. just getting a bigger light source. Like maybe a profoto rig :) Orrrrr not.

How about a couple of nice Floor lamps that create a nice white light, and will look like they belong in his office.
I have a pair of BlueMax 70W Floor Lamps that create great light, and are dimmable. And they will fit into the
decode of most offices. I got mine with Nickel Plating. And at work I have a black desktop version for my desk.
