I'm relatively new to this group, and have read and read some great posts. I was looking for a wide-angle lens for my D30. The only lens I have right now, is a 28-200mm USM zoom.

Are there any decent lenses out there that I can have for around the $500 mark?

Thanks for the input.

I've read that the Sigma 15-30 f/3.5-4.5 EX is a good wide angle. B&H has it for $549.

If you read down the forum just two posts you'll find this thread;

..where the only real canon alternatives are discussed.

Unfotunately for some reason no one other than Canon and Sigma make a wide angke zoom to fit Canon. (other manufacturers go down to only 20mm or 19mm)

Steve,

another budget alternative might be the 16 mm Zenitar fisheye (manual only, $150 new) that RDenney describes in this 'For those who want wide' thread.

As I don't know how to link a thread, I brought it up again by asking him for the promised sample shots...

Regards,
Andy

Steve,
As an alternative for Sigma 15-30mm, you may consider the cheaper 17-35mm. I have just bought one for few weeks and found that the output pix were very satisfactory. Highly recommended if your budget is limited.

Regards,
rangerx

Not sure what your budget is, but at the cheaper end is the Cosina 19-35.

Its not a great lens, but its not awful either. I have taken the same pic with a Cosina and a Canon 20-35. You can see a difference in the results but you have to look for it, its not obvious.

I suppose its 90% of the lens for about 30% of the money.

(Cosina is the UK brand, not sure what it is in US, but its sold, for more money!, as the Vivitar as well)

Nobody can tell you what to buy but you. You are the only one that can judge what is good enough for your needs and budget but you.

That said, my vote goes to the Sigma 15-30. I am happy with that lens. It is great for the money. Nice and wide, sharp pictures and solid feel and well built. Great for the price.

If you want to see any pics from this lens, you can see my pbase gallery. Go into the Sigma 15-30 test photo gallery and jusge for yourself.
