I have an image I took without a "lens" that I would like to add to my gallery. I shot the photo using prime focus on my telescope, that is the telescope was my lens. But my telescope isn't available as a lens to be added to my gear, so I cannot choose it in the drop down when editing the metadata for that image. This is preventing me from adding the photo my gallery. Is there a workaround to this? Can I add my telescope to the list of lenses? Then I would be able to tag all the photos I take this way with it.

The photo in question is in this thread: Opposition of Jupiter

Retired Cameras: Canon SD300, Nokia N95, Galaxy S, S3 & S4

A number of people have requested the ability to add gear to the gear database, but it hasn't happened. Not sure if that will ever be made possible. For now all you can do is simply choose something else. You could edit your post to explain why the exif isn't correct. Well, I always do when my lens isn't on the list.

I know Pekka is always working to improve this forum running on his own software, so I wouldn't rule out this feature being added. As the saying goes, the best coders are lazy. And implementing this feature would allow the community to maintain the database instead of him having to do it. I can see the concern with the gear db getting cluttered though if it were open to editing. So perhaps he'd want to limit gear db editing to people with over 100 posts, or appoint a mod or two to be in charge of monitoring it and keeping it clean, merging dupes, fixing incorrect info, etc.

My concern with tagging it incorrectly is that not only will the image itself be tagged incorrectly, but then it will show up the gallery for that lens where it doesn't belong. So people looking at a gallery of images for a specific lens will see something that shouldn't be there.

But, perhaps this is my only recourse for the time being since I really want to add this photo to my gallery. Maybe I'll tag it with my UWA 11-24mm lens so it's obvious that it is a misprint and people don't think I somehow pulled a magical 200mm shot. I'll wait a little longer and see if Pekka chimes in on this before I do it though.

Your concern is a good one, Charles, but tagging your Jupiter image with a UWA should be like a red flag. What a clever idea!
By the way, it's Pekka's own suggestion in case of missing gear to choose something else.

Cool, thanks for that info. I think I'll do that soon then. I'm just very pleased with how that Jupiter photo came out. I think that's about the best I can get with this equipment. Any improvements are going to be minor.

And yeah, that's my hope. Anyone looking through the Canon 11-24mm f/4 L lens gallery would see that Jupiter shot and think, that's not right. They would then click into the thread and see how it was actually captured. When the equipment database gets updated for telescopes, then I can go back and fix the tag.

As for the telescope equipment. I don't think that we would need to include all the various telescopes out there. A generic "telescope" would work. The specifics can be explained in the thread, and/or your signature, like mine is.

I agree, a "generic "telescope"" would be enough.

Your Jupiter image is excellent. It deserves to be in your gallery. That way it will also be seen by more people and the image deserves that too.

I suggested prior that forum members can add items to the DB, and administrators can simply accept or reject requests without having to do much. I think that's the way it should be done, rather than the request thread that hasnt been updated in ages.

picking another similar lens just presents unreliable data, which makes searching via lens not nearly as effective.

I agree. But since picking something is the only workaround that currently exists I chose not to pick a similar lens, but to pick the most dissimilar lens I could. Someone might think I made that with my 200mm lens when they see that in the gallery. It should be blatantly obvious that this should could never be captured with an 11-24mm lens. So that's my recommendation. Until this is fixed, chose the most dissimilar "lens" you can. And once it is fixed, go update your gallery photos with the correct information. Or just remove the restriction that we need to choose a lens in order to add a photo to our gallery. That would alleviate the problem of being forced to tag incorrect info in order to add something to your gallery.
