I have recently ditched the 5d3 (and a couple lenses) and picked up a very small a6500 kit. Particularly for the portability as I has all but stopped taking the bigger camera rig with me anywhere. While a wonderful lens, I'm finding 50mm (equivalent to 75mm on the crop body) not quite adequate for what I used the 85mm on the 5d3. I just picked up another EF 85 1.8 through the POTN classified section. It's waiting for me at home today. (I knew I would regret selling mine!!). As a significantly less expensive alternative to the Metabones (1/2 the price) I picked up a sigma MC-11. This adapter has been getting great reviews and works with a lot of EF lenses, the 85 1.8 being one of them. I'll update in the next few days as to what my experience is. If it works out that might be a way to save a few bucks. I picked mine up for $175 like new in box.

PS. I understand that excitement. I too haven't been this excited about photography gear in quite some time!

Sony is supposed to announce a 85/1.8 sometime this year...more of a budget lens compared to their 85/1.4GM lens.

This is supposed to be a big year for lens releases from Sony so stay tuned.

Shot my daughters soccer game the other day...used the a6300 with the 70-200/4G
The AF-C is awesome...just about every shot was in focus...Even heard some geese, looked up, took a quick BIF, then right back to the game...
Focus didn't let me down...pretty exciting really, such strong AF in such a small package..

Cool! Question… Which focused "area" are you using. I've had great results with the a6500 when out skiing. Nearly every shot in focus. That said, I've chosen to use the "flexible spot-S" and manually track the subject. I've not had a lot of luck using The "lock on" auto tracking modes. It might be user error but The Camera tends to shift the focus to other subjects in the scene. Maybe I just need more practice.

Yeah, I think wide area works pretty good, but its hard when there's lots of different subjects running around...but I lock on center flexible M spot and that works the best i think.

Lock-on AF is not good for complex motion. It's good as a focus and recompose method, or with simple motion where your subject is jumping out of the frame or is having things jump in and out in front of it. Lock-on AF basically uses the live view image to 'remember' your subject and find it, but it gets tripped up if there's a lot going in the frame.

For complex motion, af-c with a non lock-on point works best.

Thanks for the post. This pretty much sums up my experience. Thanks!

Guess I got lucky...It held very well with lock on center for me..But, it's the 1st sports Ive shot with that body and lens and was playing with the AF a lot.
If af-c with a non lock-on will even be better, then...nice.

Af-c non lock-on is deadly accurate! As long as I can keep the green AF area on the subject it nails 99% of all shots. That includes fast action coming right at me! These a6xxx cameras are very legit action cameras. I'm super stoked on mine!

On another note.....I know you had the E50 1.8 oss for a short period of time before upgrading to the FE 55 1.8. What are your thoughts? Do you think the 55 is that much better than the 50? Sharpness, color, overall IQ? Hows the snappiness of the AF? Lastly, does it support all AF functions with video? I have the Zony 24 mm and while I love the IQ, the AF-c is pathetically slow with video. Almost not usable with anything that is moving much. Sucks cause its a great FL to use for vids. The 50 on the other hand is super fast when using AF-c. I'd prefer 55mm over 50. I just wonder if it's worth the extra cash?? thoughts? Thanks

I can't speak on the AF for video except to say that the Af is less noisy in the Zeiss.
To be honest, the main reason I upgraded was for the splash and dust protection. I was pretty happy with the 50's sharpness and IQ. The Zeiss is a little sharper, although the OSS on the 50 kinda made up for that a little, if that makes sense. I didn't test the AF head to head but the Zeiss AF is very fast and sure. Not much help here I know, that's probably because yes, it's an upgrade, but not by much...

My favorite combo is the Batis 25 on the 6300...The Batis is badass

^^ Great info. Thanks! ^^ I'm sure the Batis is sweet. Nice shot! My goal is to keep the smallest, most compact kit possible. The Zeiss/Sony 24 is good quality in a small package. Just sucks that the AF is so dang slow with vids! vmad
