Every day there is a gathering such as your image #2 on an adjacent island here. Then a small group will take off, travel, say, about 300-400 yards and then start slow circling as they gain altitude. Other groups will follow and join in, one group at a time, until the flock may number close to a hundred pelicans or more. Then off they go in a single direction; but again in groups. Rog

Sounds cool Rog. I personally didn't see any of that activity but I'd guess if it happens elsewhere it likely happens here too.
