Back in 2002 I was looking for a good ball head that I could trust not to let me down when things got tough. I looked at the Arca Swiss but they had the binding up solid issue if mistreated. Eventually I found a company called Acratech
who make an amazing ball head, bought it, even paid the extra import duty to get it into the UK (ouch). Have used it ever since and never had a problem with it so far, I liked it so much I bought another for my wife. If your in the UK WEX stock them.
If you do buy it (go on its the last one you will ever need) spend the extra $10 for the rubberized knob rather than the metal one, your fingers will thank you for it at the end of the day. Just checked looks like they are all rubberized now so less to worry about.
