I gleaned from your post to never use Paintshop Pro, neither method yields good results. :)

 I deliberately underdid the settings while in PaintShop Pro, so the varied result depending upon sequence of action could be seen.

The shot from LR with zero noise reduction and sharpening was truly horrid...

And this is what a quick attempt to increase noise reduction settings and sharpening settings resulted in (again, settings not optimized!)

You're welcome to take the JPG (first photo in this post) into Photoshop so I can see what $10 per month to Infinity can do for my JPG editing! ;-)a

The 5D noise is a bit rough. That LR with no sharpening or NR still seems a bit processed from the raw files I have seen from the 5D? It has been a long time though, perhaps my memory isn't what it was.

Additional point. In Lightroom it is important to experiment with the Masking slider when applying sharpening, as this makes a big difference to the effect. Holding down the ALT key while adjusting the Masking slider will show you exactly which areas of the image the Sharpening will be applied to.

You can also apply localised sharpening and NR (either positive or negative) using the Adjustment brush.

Same control also works when setting the Black or White point.

Interesting, didn't know that. I tried it and discovered the Alt key also affects the Exposure, Shadows and Highlights adjustments.

Heh! Back to the "old days"! A "horrendously underexposed" 5DC image at ISO 1600 will indeed be "horrendous!!:):) The 5DC comes out well at, say, ISO 400, but I wouldn't tend to push it higher!

I will say, though, that Wilt's NR and Sharpening adjustments came out pretty nicely, all things considered!!

My 5Dc produced great results at higher ISOs than 400...I regularly shot at 800 and 1600 and got very good results. Noise would start to be a problem from 1600 upwards...
