I was typing an email, and it stopped and said Windows was shutting down.
Then it said Windows 10 was installing ... Do not turn off your computer.
Now that was very scary as Sony have declared they are not providing Windows 10 drivers or support for this Laptop. And advise not to upgrade from Windows 7 SP 1.

Very scary 15 minutes - but fortunately all seems well. except I do have an exclamation mark on an unknown driver that is called a "root printer" but the HP Laserject is there, working properly and printing perfectly.

I went over to the Vaio site and double checked - still not supporting Windows 10, but a link to supported Laptops shows mine as unsupported but fortunately it passed all the tests!

The Laptops below mine all had quite a few failures here and there - so very lucky.
Just a warning to anyone who doesn't want to or shouldn't upgrade - I Certainly didn't Invoke this install.

If I want to do a clean install in the future, can I use my Retail copy of Wi dows 10 just bought on a USB stick for the new Workstation to physically load the OS, and just skip the Product key input as Allegedly its mysteriously locked my right to upgrade to the mother board?? Is that true?

Everyone needs to go to askWoody.com to fine out what MS is trying/succeeding in pulling off.

Install GWX Control Panel ASAP, too.

Windows 10 does not install unless you allow it and agree to the EULA.

Yes, in the future you can do a clean install of Win10 from the USB stick. Although at that point, you'll probably just want to make your own using the Media Creation Tool since it'll be current. Microsoft will have a record of that PC being upgraded and will activate again.

It lets you disable the "Get Windows 10" tray icon.

Thanks!

I'm always a little bit leary of installing unknown s/w on my machine from unfamiliar sites. Many try to sneak in other aps if you overlook the default settings or miss some fine print.

I hear you. But I've heard good things about GWX Control Panel from reputable sources.

Have you used it yourself and was installation smooth with no "subterfuge?"

Right now you have the option. Soon, whether you want it or not, they will force you to. It happened with 8. They say they have to do it so some of the "security features" will work properly

I just upgraded everything to Windows 10 so I haven't used it personally. But Steve Gibson (has a computer security podcast) recommends it. He's super paranoid so that's enough endorsement for me.

They didn't force anyone to upgrade to Win8 and won't do it with Win10. That would break too much stuff. They'll just keep annoying people though. New computers are a different story. Its still possible to get Win7 but not for much longer and newer Intel platforms won't be supported on anything less than Win10.

Windows 10 does not install unless you allow it and agree to the EULA.

One of the pop-up windows about Windows 10 says something to the effect of "I want to do it later" and Windows DOWNLOADS an upgrade installation file and waits to install! Someone warned about this behavior, as he made the mistake of choosing the 'Later' button and then discovered how deceptive the message was.

According to this site this forced upgrade has happened to a lot of people. The reports of it randomly shutting down your pc and just starting the upgrade are legion!
No opportunity to back up your files and no way of stopping it.

Sounds the same as my incident.

I'm not angry, as I think I have no problems.
But as its unsupported, it could have gone very badly.

Can one use rufus to create a bootable usb stick with this on like you do for a bios?
