I think they got the B17 payload up a bit from the 4000 Lb mark, but then they couldn't reach Berlin IIRC. What gets me is the the DH 98 Mosquito could carry a 4000 Lb bomb load to Berlin, and was the fastest aircraft in the world when it entered service. Faster than all of the then current fighter types.
