E-TTL and E-TTL II use a preflash for metering purposes. I suggest you read up on it at the following link:

ST-E2 will not allow 3 groups.
580 EX is ergonomically better then the 550EX. Very much faster at setting ratio's
580 as master will allow you to use it on camera flash as fill, ST-E2 will not ;)
