I have an opportunity to go to Shark Valley in S. Florida tomorrow, but am wondering what the bird situation is there. Today at the Anhinga Trail there were few birds - and I understand it has been like that for a couple months.

Pls let me know - I might go elsewhere if Shark Valley is also not good.

I'm sure it was better than anhinga trail which has been disappointing lately. if you get a chance visit Wakodahatchee wetlands in Del Ray- its really good now

Thanks. I decided to skip Shark Valley. I did go to Wakodahatchee and it was great.

Some of the places that were amazing a few years ago are duds now. Merritt Island's Black Point drive is another example. Folks seem to know, because there were also few people, and no big white lenses.

There are other places that are still teeming with birds.

Why has there been such a shift?

water quality and levels are probably the best answer to that. wading birds like falling water in the glades and low tides along the coast. we had a super wet winter and a dry summer- that's the opposite of ideal. birds can go anywhere and I'm convinced if they are not where they usually are they have found a better spot. keep looking and watching local reports. it is really good out west now

OK, thanks. Water levels at the Anhinga trail were indeed very high, and were last year too, when there were also few birds. That must be the explanation.

Thanks for the tip, and don't worry, I won't tell anyone.
