What happens with image stabilization with CF4-1? Don't you want it at the time the picture is taken? So, if focus is achieved with the * button, when you depress the shutter there will no longer be any image stabilization effect - right or wrong? Or do you have to press the * button at the same time?

Both the * button and/or the shutter release will activate the IS.

You lose no functionality at all.

I didn't realize that the * button (with CF4=1) activates IS. The shutter button definitely does, though. That's the setup I use all the time.

Actually, you have to press the shutter 1/2 way to activate the * button on my 20D. If you just press the * button first AF does not activate. Pressing the button will start IS and it will keep running as long as you keep the * button pressed. If it your take your thumb off the * button, IS will eventually stop, but it will start again as soon as you start to press the shutter to take the picture.

Are you talking with Custom Function 4 = 0 or 1?

CF4 on 0 doesn't do anything. AF is left on the shutter. I use CF4-1 or 3.
