Indeed, the Varied Carpet Beetle A. verbasci are a common household pest. It was a bit of a challenge to photo. They're about 3mm in length and very round bodied. This one was dispatched once I was done with it.

Thank you for the comments. On a side note, these insects are known in the forensics field to take bites out of hair that is part of the general debris in carpet. When the hairs are examined microscopically, you can see their handiwork.
