This photo was shot by a friend who was with a group, and he promised them he would not divulge their "secret" location.

He did say, it was shot from a pier, somewhere in Bayonne NJ.

The pier is public property, but next to private property, making it somewhat hard to find (according to my friend.)

Personally, I think it's silly and stupid to hide a location like this from friends.

I'm obsessed! I want to figure it out and I NEED EVERYONE'S HELP!

Is there anyone from Bayonne NJ, or anyone familiar with the water front in Bayonne, where this shot could have been take from?

Let me know, if you have any idea.

Thank you!!!

PS - if you think I posted this in the wrong section, let me know where to re-post it. :-)

Using Google Maps, Bayonne/SoL/ESB to plot a line, it *appears* that it would be somewhere down around Caven Point or the docks just south of there.

Thanks! I also tried to figure it out by looking at Google Maps, but it's just a guess. Would love to be more specific.

Much appreciated, for replying!

My best guess is 51 Port Terminal Blvd, Bayonne. It is the 9/11 Teardrop Memorial. You might wanna go a bit to the west on the pier, but that is something that's best to figure out on the spot.

Show us the your version of the shot when you get there!

Oh, and make sure to bring a long lens because it seems like quite a distance ;-)a

Looks like it's at the end of the pier where Port Jersey Blvd is.

I agree. It appears (based on my map data . . . I've never been there) that it is the only place where the line of sight is bang on for this shot.

drawing a line from the center of the Empire state building through the center of the Statue of Liberty and to the next land mass, it puts you right at 40°40'5.85"N / 74° 3'56.71"W. End of the pier.

Driving on Port Jersey Blvd towards the end of the dock area would get the clearest view, but it looks like it is no open to the public. So I would agree with thijs and say 51 Port Terminal Blvd, Bayonne. Around Cape Liberty Cruise Port or the Tear Drop Memorial. Assuming that there are no shipping containers, buildings, or other stuff in the way obstructing the view.

Hardly. The fact that he's keeping a promise made to his friends proves that he's very good as a friend. :)

It's by Tear Drop Memorial, and with a very, very long lens you can get a perfect line for the shot over the top of the docks. But personally I'd drive to the end of Port Jersey Blvd, park up just before the entrance and try and walk along the shoreline to the end of the point as it's a much shorter distance to the statue

Here's what I discovered:

I scouted the location and brought my Canon 100-400 lens, to see if could match his location.

First stop was Port Jersey Blvd, adjacent to a container shipping company. It's very ugly industrial area and the roads leading up to the street were rough. The area is not a place for the general public.

Although Port Jersey Blvd starts off as a public road, once you are on the jetty, it turns private, and there are no signs, but it begins to look more like an access road to the shipping container company, along the right side of the road (see screen shot below). It's massive and there are lots of containers stacked high, next to a large warehouse. You can't see the water until you are nearly at the end.

I parked by the side when I got to the end, and took a few snapshots of the statue. I could tell I was too far out, the statue didn't align with the empire state building, so if I backed up, it could be the correct spot. It was clean vantage point, no power lines or poles in the way.

Then this happened: As I was making a u-turn to try the better spot, I was stopped by a police car. The officer said I was on private property and had to leave immediately. I said ok, then explained what I was doing. The officer was courteous, then suggested I might try Liberty State Park or the Tear Drop Memorial.

My next stop, the Tear Drop.

The Tear Drop memorial is pretty darn weird (IMHO). It's at the end of another industrial area, and impossible to see or know it's there unless you use GPS. It's also the most unattractive memorial I've ever seen. Made me wonder who, what, where and why they let that nasty thing get built! It sits on a mound, with a tall chain link fence surrounding it. There's a port-a-potty in the entry to the grounds.

I walked the grounds, it's a very small park, but I could not get a good, clean unobstructed view of the statue! Too many telephone poles and tension wires in the way. Impossible.

You can see them in the photo below. Although I was able to align the statue with the Empire State bldg, I was not able to avoid the poles and wires.

This definately could not have been the location. There's no way to avoid the poles from getting in the way.

Last stop was Liberty State Park. This was not the spot for the photo, the statue does not line up at all.

I left in frustration, and I don't think I'll go back to try again. It's rare I give in, but this shot is royal pain in the butt to get.

It's difficult to get there, with the best spot on private property.

Thanks to all for your suggestions and for your support! I greatly appreciate it!

Here's the scouting shots and where I took them:

From your results there, it looks like Tear Drop is a dead bullseye. The shot in the original post is a dead ringer for your result from there, cropped heavily, to eliminate the poles.

Thanks!

From the shot shown above, it does look like it could be the right spot, but I still think the other "illegal" location on Port Jersey Blvd. is where he got the shot.

If I was not chased by the police car and got the chance to shoot it again from 200 feet back, I think the statue would have aligned perfectly and I would have gotten a perfectly clear shot.

Although you see the poles in the other shot, you can't see the high tension wires criss-crossing in front of it in this example. It ruins the shot. And, I had to stand on a spot that was barely able to shoot over the wire fencing.

It was worth the try, and thanks for following my trials and tribulations on this one!
