No, it's not a great photo -- but just shows that one doesn't always need a 'big gun' lens.

I've gotten at least one wolf shot every visit to Yellowstone in the Spring or Summer since 2008, and many trips I've had multiple opportunities. It's not luck so much as knowing where to go and going there over and over. I will agree, I do need to get back there. My point, though, regarding some wildlife, is that one probably isn't going to get great shots, with a one-time trip, even with really long lenses. If I had been able to spend several days, in Lamar Valley, I MAY have been able to get shots like yours. Just didn't work out for me, that trip. Yes, but I am quite sure that you were much, much, much closer than 15 yards and 10 feet, respectively. GJim wrote in post #17955253 And, you may not need a long lens at all. Here is a collection of wildlife images, all taken with the 24-105mm: "Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.

Thanks alot for your input as well as other input by other people including MalVeauX. After renting some zoom lenses like Canon 100-400 IS II and borrowing the Sigma Sport 150-600 from a buddy, I have decided to save up money for the Canon 500 F4 IS Version 1. I should have a little over $5k to spend by the end of this month. I have already bought myself a Canon 7D2, Wimberley Wh200, Induro GIT304L tripod and a Canon 1.4 Ex III extender.

Thanks for your input. Thinking long term, while I like how mobile the Canon 400 F4 DO is, I would rather fill the frame up and plan on buying a Canon 500 F4 IS version 1 at the end of this month.

Did you make your purchase? If so, what did you get and how do you like it?
