Haven't seen this type of butterfly around here before.. it's a Zebra Swallowtail.

Beauty Matt. I like how you shot up at the swallowtail. It gives the entire picture a very nice effect.

My daughter thought I needed a new photographic challenge, so she gave me the MP-E 65 Macro lens. It really is hard to use. A few of my early efforts:

Ladybug:

Jumping Spider:

Red Spider Mite (less than 1 mm long):

Did you use the built in flash? I'm assuming considering the ss

One of the reasons that the MP-E 65 is hard to use is that it doesn't let in much light. So, yes, as you noted a flash was used. With the MP-E 65, the subject is so close to the lens that the built-in flash would be blocked by the lens. Canon makes a couple of specialized flashes for the MP-E 65 that actually mount to the end of the lens. I use the MT-26EX-RT Macro Twin Lite flash.

Nice set! despite being challenging to use, ain't the MP-E a fun lens? I have no regrets buying that one, but I should use it more often.

It is fun! There is so much to see that I haven't seen before. Studio shots are easy (tripod + focusing rail), but the true nature shots are still very hard for me. I'm improving, and I know there's light at the end of the tunnel. I'm 65, and my hands aren't as steady as they used to be. Using a good monopod for the nature shots is helping quite a bit.
