Totally in love with the colors on this one. This could be straight out of a Makoto Shinkai Anime!

it was a crazy sunrise yesterday. there was a little pocket opening in the clouds that it lasted less then two minuits . The colors were off the charts in camera, I had to fix tones in lightroom and desaturate . I've never had to do both before.

Cheers,
JOE

Why do you think they don't look right? They look pretty good to me. Personally, I might have raised the shadows a bit in post, but that's a matter of taste, I think.

They aren't sharp for one. They hardly ever are tbh. Also, the color seems off to my eye. I did raise the shadows in post. Any further and it would be way to much noise. They are good enough to post on facebook, but I wouldnt chose to print either shot. Maybe that's just my own harsh criticism. If I wouldn't want to print, then it's not good enough. Lol

This is the same problem I have with bif. I think the camera exposes for the sky? I took test shots and shot these in full manual. Should have lowered the shutter speed and/or bumped the ISO a couple stops? Next time they do a fly over I hope it's not at dusk. Golden hour may be good for landscapes and the like. But its hell on aircraft! At least for me.

I shot an airshow last month with the 7D and the same 400mm F/5.6. The only thing I might suggest is what has worked for me in the past. I've been covering the airshow for the last 4 years for the newspaper.

Most of the time your subject is a small portion of the area you are shooting & yes, the camera is probably exposing for the very bright sky. I set the exposure compensation for +2 stops (also shoot full manual). It's almost like exposing for sand or snow.

In post, I much prefer to lower the brightness of the sky than bring up the shadows on the planes. It doesn't introduce nearly as much noise.

Great shots. How did you get them to do that? My frogs never listen to me.

Just find a pond where the water has evaporated a lot.... this area there are thousands on them! It's a highly cropped image, but it's all in the quiet approach, so find 'em then go back and re-approach quietly in the last hour of the day

Not sure what they look like at 100%, but at the size you posted them they look sharp to me. At least I would be happy with the sharpness.
I also think the camera exposes for the sky. The 80D can only do spot metering with the center AF point AFAIK, so I'd overexpose, like Pigpen101 suggested.
