I had zero issues with the AF in the 80D. During usage, there's only been a few times where the AF stumbled, but for the most part all of the points perform well.

Great camera!

I'm doing the same thing. But I'm trying to use all the tools. That's why I bought the thing in the first place. Well not just the extra focus points.

Iv'e found that using all of them helps with my street photography. People think I'm not looking at them, that I"m looking at something above or beyond them and don't realize its them I'm focusing on.

All 45 points perform well
However comming from 7D the navigation to a desired point on the 80D is not as easy ( i do not like the 8 way button compared to the jstick)

A second-day effort with my new 80D. Thanks for the comments about the AF points. Centre spot will do me for now. There's a lot to learn on this camera, but I'm very pleased so far. I was confused by the focusing in Live View until I got home, read the brochure and switched to FlexiZoneAF. Any thoughts on that and on metering modes? I think Centre-Weighted is getting my vote at the moment.

I pretty much just keep my camera on center-weighted for the most part.

I have a T3i currently and hope to upgrade to the 80D soon. Can you talk about the upgrade experience for you so far (IQ, autofocus performance, etc.)?

You'll appreciate how the RAW files are much more flexible than your t3i RAW files.

The AF will be refreshing as it will feel much zippier in speed. This is something you'll notice comparing it to any rebel series.

I guess as far as Canon crop sensors are concerned the 80D is right up there as good as it gets at this moment in time.

What you must realize is that what you do in post processing is the final product. Straight out of camera I think the 80D does a decent job. Perhaps preference wise I still feel the Canon full frame sensor looks better straight out of camera due to the shallower dof effect. Post processing wise I think you can make the 80D shine.

When i use my 80D it literally feels like it's a slightly bulkier version of a Panasonic GH3/4 micro 4/3 body. The 80D is quite small for a dslr imo.

I started with a t2i. Upgraded to a 50D for more fps, but liked the images from the t2i better so upgraded to a 7D. Went with an 80D last Spring and like it best so far. Image quality is good. The autofocus is better than the t2i (same as t3i I think).

My favorite part of the autofocus is this: I usually shoot center point focus. If I'm out and see a bird in flight, I can switch from center point to the center 9 points in less than 2 seconds without my eye leaving the viewfinder. The 9 points gives me a lot better chance of catching the bird in flight.

It was a tough decision between the 7DII and the 80D. I finally went with the 80D based on the reviews saying it had better DR, a few more megapixels, the flippy screen and the wifi. While in Yellowstone, I missed the extra fps and larger buffer that a 7DII would have given, but the other features really came in handy.

For example, in the following photograph, I wanted to get the bison photo from water level view. Instead of laying in the prone position (like I would have with my 7D), I rested the camera on the ground and used live view, all while sitting comfortably next to the water's edge:

Thanks for the responses. How does the live view touch autofocus work for stills? Is it ever usable for tracking moving subjects (a.k.a. people)? Do people use it with old manual focus lenses?

I have mine set up for back button focusing. Which nullifies touch focus. Ive used touch focus and seems to work just fine. Tracks well in video mode

Touch focus is amazing for video
Great for stills non moving subjects
And good for moving/tracking subject the fps drops from 7 to about 5

I also had a T3i before I bought the 80D. In Addition to what others have said, I also like the larger buffer and faster burst rate. The T3i could only take three of four shots in a burst when shooting raw, then the buffer was full..

C&C always welcome

I've been super-busy recently plus the weather sucked big time, so I didn't get to do any shooting
We had some sun today so I had a chance to snap a few quick shots in the backyard.

I just had a big problem with my T3i not starting. I opened it up and managed to get the battery to power the viewfinder display but for the life of me I cannot reconnect the lcd cable from the back panel to the main board.

I was hoping to ride it out a couple more months with this camera before I could afford upgrading to the 80d. Grr...
