Welp! These might be my last 80d photos!

Ordered the 90d as I want to keep the 80d shutter count down so I can keep it or sell it if needed. We'll see if the 90d is a step back/forward, and what all the perpetual complaining is all about... Not ready to drop $4000 on the R5 at this point!

So a few "wild" cows, never expected 'em!!!

I'll be very interested in your comments. You've certainly managed a lot of remarkable shots from your 80D. I shudder to think what the shutter count on mine is and bits are starting to fall off/wear out so sooner or later I'll want a 90D to replace it. Seems some folks are happy with the 90D and others not.

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

Well, I was photographing a great horned owl a few years ago on my 70d, and the shutter self destructed as I was standing 10' away from the owl. So, just missed a lot of what could have been great shots as the light was slowly improving that day. Trying to avoid that situation again. I'll keep the 80d in my bag with me and 'may' try some side by side testing, no tripod, just real world hand held shots like I've always posted on here.

From what I've read, you need to turn off the ITR/Face detect, and .cr3 files will require the monthly adobe subscription or you can try the free adobe dng converter... lastly it seems like you really really must have a good copy of whatever lens you're using, which I'm betting will be fine on the 100-400 II.

We shall see what happens!

Not quite ready to spend:

$4000 for the R5
$200 on extra batteries
$100 on an adapter

and I won't have the 600mm + focal length I have now, so the trade off would be with everything but the horse photos which is what I'll be chasing for the next 4-5 months...

Sounds like a good plan, and they're not heavy cameras.

A few have said it's the phase detect AF that they have issues with but it sounds like live view AF is really good. I'm thinking it might be a good candidate for trying out a red dot sight. That's what Sha Lu uses on his Sonys it seems to work well for him (understatement of the century).

Yeah I really hope the R7 is going to be a thing later this year!

As for the 80d vs 90d, it seems for instances where a bird if flying towards the camera, it's a hair slower, which leads me to believe that something changed in how one would need to setup the AI servo settings for focus lock 1st shot vs. 2nd shot (I'm not sure what they're called, but they are in there)... I'll continue to mess around with those. The good news is that I've not walked away without some great shots from the 90d.

Since I gave the 5dmkIV 1.4xIII + 100-400 II F8 AF Combo in bad light in Oregon a good 12 months/100,000 shots in order to figure out that it's simply NOT as consistent as just ditching and going 80d + 100-400 II at F5.6, I'm going to reserve judgement on the 90d 100-400 II combo for now as I'm only at around 3500 shots.

I'm having an exclamation mark in the bottom right corner of the viewfinder of my 80D. I checked the manual, but couldn't find a solution.
I tried with all of my3 batteries and several SD cards & lenses - no change.

Camera seems to work ok though.

Can anyone hint at what causes this?

TIA,
Frank

Edit:

I just worked it out. The Warning condtions can be set in C.FnIII Operation/Others

I bought a used 80D with a 24mm STM lens (for about 850 USD) and it arrived today. I'm blown away (I was using a 1100d until today)! I immediately set my settings according to this:
https://photographylife.com …mended-canon-80d-settings (external link)
I rushed out the door with my 55-250 STM, just to discovery the focus would not work! Luckily I remember a setting that stops the focus from hunting back and forth if unsuccessful. It seems to be too aggressive so I turned it off and now it focusses in a wink! I will post some pictures here over the weekend

Advice, C&C welcome

I finally pulled the trigger on upgrading my Canon SL1 to the 80D. I have taken it out twice and it will take some time to get used to all the additional functionality but I like it so far.

I took a couple photos while working in an area devastated by a tornado.

That surely is heart wrenching.
What a disaster. :-(
