Nice shot ^
Gabe very nice Bird shots in your Flickr

I see that you used the 7D - how do you compare the 80D to the good old 7D

Thanks.

Hard to tell since I used the 7D so long ago and I've used so many other bodies since. But the 80D is better on most fronts in my opinion, so many things are improved, IQ, better dynamic range for those shots where a bird is shot against a whitish cloudy sky, exposure compensation in M mode with auto ISO is great (I've been wanting that for years.) Resolution is great, I always liked the grip and handling of the 70D/80D better than the 7D, although I admit the joystick on the back a a little better than the D-pad, even though I'm used to the D-pad. It may be placebo but I feel the AF on the 80D is a little more accurate than on the old 7D, especially my first 7D which had serious issues with certain fast lenses and the center AF point (which a few 70Ds seem to suffer from as well.)

It's also hard to compare them directly since the lens(es) I used with the 7D are different than what I'm using with the 80D.

I owned a 7DII for a couple of months and it's great but I don't want to own 2 crop bodies along with my 3 FF cameras too, so the 7DII was sold because my old 70D won the "overall versatility" contest. My 70D is gone so now the 80D improves upon the 70D on pretty much all areas. So I'm glad to have the 80D. But I also have to admit that even with the pretty good IQ of the 80D I'm always surprised how awesome the Sony A7rII's IQ is when I grab it after shooting with the 80D for a while :)
All of my cameras have their strengths and weaknesses, I don't think there is one ultimate super camera that is great for everything without even minor compromises.

Sorry, my post ended up longer than I intended :)

Not really an owner, but decided to rent an 80D for the weekend.

Gonna be down in the laguna seca/salinas/monterey area.

Having used a 1D Mark IIN the past 7 years and a Sony NEX-6 the past 3, ive forgotten what its like to hold a smaller form DSLR. I kind of like the size of it.

I also like the viewfinder, its almost as big as my 1D.

anyways, heres a pic OF the camera :p

I LOVE it! A big thing I like is that you can now activate the red af point during Servo.
The 100% view finder makes a big difference... the new AF system is great... and I am still finding little things I like.
I havent even gotten a chance to try it in low light or with a speedlight yet.
I got about a 90-95% keeper rate on the last soccer match I shot. I was just over shooting so I could really test it in Servo.

AND I am only coming from the 70D. I couldn't even imagine someone coming from an old rebel.

I'm the same way. Besides the well publicized new features of the 80D (sensor, new AF system, etc.), I still find something new and mostly useful little gems in the menu system (or by reading a review somewhere).
Like the new Auto ISO/minimum shutter speed implementation. Not only can we designate minimum shutter speed as usual, but now also make the automatic camera-picked SS slower or faster. So I can leave it up to the camera to decide the ISO needed for the shutter speed (which traditionally 1/FL x 1.6 in Canon's APS-C bodies), but now I can adjust that to be much faster or slower. Interesting and useful feature.

I noticed this too! I set it to faster. I have yet to really test it though. I need a nice partly cloudy day that isn't raining so I can test it with variable light while shooting action.

I've got a 60d as well. Honestly, I still like both of those bodies. My brother has the 70d and to be quite honest, the bounce flash thing totally turned me off. It was awful. An 80d may be a possibility when the body starts dropping in price. It seems solid.

Everyone talks about this bounced flash issue with the 70D. I did some tests a couple months ago by request in another thread and found no problem. And I did it with 2 different STM lenses which I was told were "guaranteed" to cause underexposure on the 70D when the flash is bounced.

Never thought I'd ever own 2 camera bodies at once, but I just ordered the 80D! What pushed me over the edge was:

- crop sensor for more reach for birds w/ my 100-400 II + 1.4x TC
- more active cross-type points at f/8
- flip screen for easier ground level macro
- built in wi-fi
- it'll give my lenses a different look coming vs. using my 5D3

Honestly, I am stoked! It was between this and the 7DII, but the points above sold me on the 80D. Plus, the price from CanonPriceWatch was too good to pass up :)

Yep. I fell into the same trap as you, Matthew. That deal was simply too awesome to pass up. Everybody always needs another body, right!

Mine arrives tomorrow!

Must be a trend. I was lured in by the printer/MIR deal. I'm upgrading my gf from her T3i and plan to use the 80D as a backup to my 5D3 when needed.

Ours just came in this afternoon, and after playing with it for a bit, I'm very impressed. The build and responsiveness are very nice, and the AF system is pretty impressive. I have a feeling that this will be a great camera to throw on a gimbal/glidecam when shooting video. I can certainly see jumping between the 5D3 and 80D for either cameras relative strengths.
