At 400mm and MFD you get a .31x maximum magnification which is pretty awesome. Adding a 1.4x extender will magnify it even more. The compression at that length along with that close MFD gives ridiculously smooth backgrounds.

It's close focusing abilities is one of the 1-4mk2's best attributes.

The MFD was one of the reasons that made me get the 100-400 II. Most of the times I can't get close enough to dragonflies or damselflies to use a macro lens as they often sit on twigs or grass stalks that hang over water. That makes the tele ideal for shooting them.

This little guy hanging out in the yard today. I tried the 45 point af today on this and it seems to work pretty good. And this is with the 55-250. I haven't tried it with my 35 f2 is or 17-55 f2.8 yet. Normally I use center point af.

I coukd be wrong, but i always figured the 45 points were for sports or BIF. Something with lots of movement
