Question: I just noticed on my 80D when i depress the shutter button half way the LCD comes on but it seems to stay on during the picture taking procedure, i. e. even when I put the camera to my eye. Don't remember that happening before. Plus the LCD seems to stay on longer than I remember.

Have I got some settings messed up? If there a setting for changing any of that? I've looked but don't seem to find an appropriate setting to change these things. Seems to me that once the camera is brought to the eye the LCD should go black. No?

Yes, that is about the one thing that annoyed me about the 80D. I was used to a 100D, which has a sensor to turn the LCD off when the camera is brought to your eye. The best you can do is go to Menu > yellow spanner tab > 2 > LCD off/on btn and change it to Shutter btn. The LCD will then turn off when you press the shutter button or AF-ON button.

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

OK thanks. Funny I never noticed that until this weekend.

Not so happy about it. It's distracting.

So.... Momma said all my lenses are too heavy for her, so I picker her up an EF 70-300 IS II USM & AFMA'd it Sunday.

This lens works surprisingly well and it's ridiculously light weight. It should serve her well.

This was her very first shot with the camera, not to mention the new lens.

Here's one more from our back yard, also with the new lens.

How hard is it to MFA the lens and about how long did it take you?

Hi Harry,

It's really quite simple. There are numerous ways to go about it, but for the last couple years I've used the very simple "DotTune" method quite successfully. I tried paid software, but never felt real good about the results.

Here's a quick video that explains the process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zE50jCUPhM (external link) . Once you have the hang of it, there's nothing to it.

Here's an online calculator to enter the offset numbers into that will calc the mid-point value to use after calibration: www.testcams.com/DotTune/CalcMidPoint.html (external link)

Remember, that on a zoom lens you will have to perform the exercise twice - once at min focal length & again at max focal length.

One challenge is space. The longer your lens, to more space you need. I use the warehouse at work.

If you want to build an Excel spreadsheet for your lens data, you can use the following formula to calc the necessary distance (in feet) that your camera needs to be from the target based on focal length (in mm) of your lens: Focal Length*0.0393700787*50/12

Be sure your camera is mounted to to a tripod and you are using a remote shutter release to reduce the possibility of moving anything during the process.

I will definately give it a go. Do you turn off image stabilization also, since it's tripod mounted?

The 100-400 seems to be glued to my 80D at the moment. I should force myself to use other lenses more often ;-)a

Why would you disable is? The sharper the image the better you can see where the focus area is compared to the out of focus areas, no?

Cheers,
JOE

Thanks everyone for all the beautiful photos and great discussion. My order is in - hope to have my own 80D next week. Very keen to get my hands on my first Canon crop body, and hope to soon be contributing to this thread.

Cheers

Alec
