Took the 80D to the zoo for its second outing. Metering is definitely different so I will have to ditch my 7D settings.

Jul 04, 2017 17:53 | #1271 Michael456 wrote in post #18363463 Thanks for the advice everyone. AF settings I used were:
Shutter speeds were 1/1250 & 1/1600 (raised the speed after I saw that lots of photos were just not sharp enough) and IS was off. This might not be a good example photo but unfortunately I deleted most of them right away ![]() From DPP showing active AF points: Hosted photo: posted by Michael456 in ./showthread.php?p=18363463&i=i267861770 forum: Canon Digital Cameras 100% crop: Hosted photo: posted by Michael456 in ./showthread.php?p=18363463&i=i251773333 forum: Canon Digital Cameras Know this is an old post, but your softness looks like it is due to panning motion. Look at the edges of the bird, they blurred and most noticeable. It boils down to technique, don't jerk the camera and be smooth, higher SS would continue to help too. I happen to use +2 for your two +1 settings.

Jul 04, 2017 18:00 | #1272 Michael456 wrote in post #18364370 I tried some BIF again today. I changed the Tracking Sensitivity setting to -2 and felt it tracked the birds a bit better that way. I also raised shutter speed to 1/2000 as has been suggested. While I did get some nice shots, I still had lots of photos were nothing was really in focus. One example: Screen shot from DPP showing the active focus point: Hosted photo: posted by Michael456 in ./showthread.php?p=18364370&i=i65435358 forum: Canon Digital Cameras 100% crop: Hosted photo: posted by Michael456 in ./showthread.php?p=18364370&i=i235276064 forum: Canon Digital Cameras Basically the whole bird is slightly out of focus. Other shots are nice and sharp, but I feel there are way too many like this one. I'd like to try without the extender, but the dang birds just won't let me get close enough. Maybe I should just stick to macro ![]() Are you getting consistently sharp photos when stationary? Has MFA been done, this shot looks like it could be slightly back focused, but it could be tracking or technique issue.

Jul 04, 2017 18:46 | #1275 i-G12 wrote in post #18387209 Question: I just noticed on my 80D when i depress the shutter button half way the LCD comes on but it seems to stay on during the picture taking procedure, i. e. even when I put the camera to my eye. Don't remember that happening before. Plus the LCD seems to stay on longer than I remember. Have I got some settings messed up? If there a setting for changing any of that? I've looked but don't seem to find an appropriate setting to change these things. Seems to me that once the camera is brought to the eye the LCD should go black. No? There use to be a light sensor that would detect the eye coming to the VzF in some models that would turn off the LCD. I believe the original 7d had it. But, most newer models do Not have it any long for some unknown reason. You can only change the on time of the LCD with 30seconds being the minimum. The LCD drains the battery, about 6% extra per hour of being on.
