Black-backed Woodpeckers

Yesterday we went looking specifically for black-backed woodpeckers. The day started off slowly and we found none where we thought we might find them. Then, in early afternoon, we took a road home that I don't often drive and found two pairs of this uncommon species. I've only ever seen one at a time before, let alone two pairs; I can go years without seeing a single one. They are certainly a handsome species.

Thank you all very kindly. If one looks at the range map for black-backed woodpeckers, it is essentially coast to coast across the boreal north. Having said that, I think they would probably be considered an uncommon sighting everywhere.
