Its been on my mind alot, I see alot of reasons to move but just dont know if its the right move based on what I need, I am an action sports photographer first and foremost, but also have made the move into underwater photography as well as wildlife photography and I can see my self doing much much more of that. For the sports work, I shoot for brands and magazines most of the time and starting to do more prints and such as well. I have been a Canon user for 95% of photography work with a short move to the Nikon D7100 but the buffer was to small for me at the time. Right now I have a 5D Mark III that I use and Im looking to move up to the 1DX if I want to stay with Canon or move to the Nikon side with the D4 or the D810. The new D500 looks really good as well and I dont mind crop really since the D7200 images I have seen are really really good. The D4 looks great, the D4s is still a bit on the high side of price for me and the D5 is just to much for me to spend. The D810 while most will say its not a sports camera and I agree, the images are really really hard to beat. The 36mp would be nice for some sports like Surfing where I can shoot on a 600mm and then crop more if needed. Like to hear what others have to say, I have added two images that show the kind of work that I do.

I'd stick with what you have personally and grab a 1DX, I'm a Nikon user and I definitely miss my Canon's when shooting anything fast moving. Choice of lenses is much greater with Canon too and at better prices usually.

I love the 1DX, but the images are the same as the 5D Mark III from my testing, thats the only thing. I mean they are still great images for sure. I do like the big Nikon lens though, havent tested them much but they are a bit lighter then the Canon versions to me at least.

I currently use both Nikon and Canon. My Nikon gear is older (D200), but I like my lenses (especially my 24mm 2.8 AF D, 35mm 2.0 AFD, 180mm 2.8 AF ED, 300mm 4.0 AF S, 80-200mm 2.8 AF ED and my 17-55mm 2.8 AF S DX).

Fairly recently I got a 7dmk2 and three lenses (50mm 1.8 STM, 16-35 f4 L and 70-200 2.8L non IS).

While shopping for Canon lenses I noticed they were more expensive than Nikon lenses. One good thing about Nikon lenses is that you can fit older AF D lenses on any Nikon body with a focus motor on the lens mount ( D200, D300, D500, D7000, D7100 and all their top pro bodies). Some of these older lenses are fantastic, like the 180mm 2.8 AF ED.

My main reason for wanting to try Canon was to shoot sports. The flicker compensating feature on the 7dmk2 and its better build quality compared to the D7200 at the time were the top selling points for me. Also, the AF tracking had a reputation of being superb.

Both systems have their strong points . I would say rent a Nikon with the lens or lenses you would like, and then compare it to what you already have. Chances are you might be surprised at how well your current equipment performs.

But you said that if you stayed with Canon you would be getting the 1DX ??????
You also mentioned you need a camera for action ,sports and wildlife, well the 1DX is the camera for that and will knock spots off your current 5D3..

I have used and rent the 1DX I understand how powerful it is, I have after testing a D810 and even though I loved it will stick with Canon for my gear, I will be upgrading to the the 5D Mark IV or the 5Dsr for my body and renting 1DX II for bigger gigs.
