I was visiting family and friends in Oakland CA. Someone broke into the rental van while it was parked in a busy street a few hours ago. I am not sure if I wrote down the serial number somewhere, but I do have a picture of the back of the camera. There is a mark that looks like a candy cane in the rear lower LCD that does not come off, so it is very easy to identify. So if you live in that area of town and see it in Craigslist or some pawn shop, please notify me. By the grace of God that I already downloaded the wedding images I took ten days earlier from the cards into my lab top.

Thanks!

Terrible news! You might want to reach out directly, via PM, to some of the members in the area and ask them to be on the lookout (maybe Ed Rader?).

Why did you put this in the For Sale thread?

I am not sure where to put it. If the Mod needs to move it, please feel free to do so.

Thanks,

Check exif from some pictures, you should find serial number.

Not sure if the lens photo taken in Dec was with this 1DX or the other one, but the exif for that lens for sale image shows this:

Body Serial Number = 062011000160

I think it's a good strategy to post this notice here. The people looking here for used gear are probably looking at other outlets where this gear might show up. Those same people people might never browse a discussion thread though it may technically be more appropriate.

Oh nooo..sorry to hear that :( You should also post in Craigslist too. And if I were you, I would call some pawn shops nearby for starter. Then call other shops randomly everyday, just to check if someone has sold the camera.

You can check the entire Oakland area craigslist from one site, keeping an eye on what pops up very quickly.

The grassroots methods are important and also the best first line of action, but also be aware of helpful online services like lenstag and stolencamerafinder.

Wishing the OP the best of luck.

Back when I used to live in NY, me and my NYPD friend actually caught some of the thiefs from pawn shops. I have many friends whose items got stolen and ended up in pawn shop.

According to my NYPD friend and his statistic, almost all thiefs will not post their stolen items in Craigslist, ebay, or any online site within couple of days/weeks, that's because the news spread so fast in the internet and they are not that stupid to post them in Craigslist. It's either they wait for months or sell it quickly to pawn shops, mostly the smaller shops.

That's why I advise Buckeye to call randomly some shops, it only takes seconds. Looking at Craigslist is kinda wasting time IMO. Yes you can put an ad in CL but don't expect to get something from it.

There are tons of "REWARD: STOLEN (insert item)" kind of ads in CL that's been re posted for so long, some of them might be more than 1 year and no results at all. I'm pretty sure whatever the items are already ended up in anywhere around the globe probably.

However searching the oakland area CL and even 200 miles from there is quite easy, and it would be something I would do daily regardless of the odds. It doesn't take much to set up the search and then just execute daily. You can hit all CL in the area with one search.

Perhaps I am being obvious with the site that does this search for you, but if not, perhaps it will help many others: http://searchtempest.com (external link)

Fortunately too, not all crooks are created equal, so you never know whether you had somebody reasonably bright steal your stuff, or a dolt.

Also, people do a horrendous job of taking care of their ads on CL, so just the existence of an ad that is old doesn't tell you anything about the fulfillment of the ad.
