This person seem to be a pro at what he/she did.

Theft of photo equipment has become a specialty in the Bay Area. TV news crews have been robbed of their video cameras at gunpoint. It's too bad you (apparently) didn't know about this trend before you visited.

I have a friend in the bay area who always manages to get Canon gear at amazing prices. Now I know why!

.

I encourage you to report the theft to the local police and have them file a report. Most police departments are really good at tracking down this kind of stuff and prosecuting the scoundrels who stole it.

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

Tom, I'm afraid you don't know the local area. These thefts have been going on for quite a while. Police departments here fall far short of the ideal, and they're overwhelmed by the high rate of person crime.

The police officers were there and a report has been filed. A lead investigator have also been assigned. Just wait and see now :-)

I sure wish it was easier to find a good policy. We haven't been able to find anything under $500 a year.

How much equipment? 5 yrs ago I had like 30K equipment with $1 million liability for < $700 and this in CA. Even if it was $1000/$2000 it is part of doing business IMHO. What happens if you save that $1000/$2000 and loose all your equipment and then can't work.

Where in bay area? Haven't heard anything but then I don't check new much. It is quite safe here, I wouldn't go around scaring folks.

sfgate (San Francisco Chronicle's Web version) has run stories on still and video equipment theft in San Francisco, Berkeley, and Oakland. Twin Peaks is a hot spot for quick, brazen camera grabs.
