I love the “OFF” switch so much I might even be tempted to actually buy a mobile phone just so that I can savour the delightful pleasure of turning it off.

I'll wait until they invent a switch that turns off the mobile phone of everyone near me.

They are called jammers and they exist, but are illegal.

I think that mobile phones are the bane of modern day society, but the one redeeming feature that I absolutely love about mobile phones is the “OFF” switch. I love that fact that you can actually turn off a mobile phone. In fact I love the “OFF” switch so much I might even be tempted to actually buy a mobile phone just so that I can savour the delightful pleasure of turning it off.

I cannot use the "OFF" switch. I have a job for which I am on call 24/7.....I am a first responder, of sorts.

At any time of day or night I could receive a text from my boss and I have to be prepared to respond within 5 minutes. That means that I take the phone into the bathroom with me so that I can hear it whilst showering. That means that if I have it sitting on my desk while I am at the computer, and I go outside for a minute to get something from my car, I have to take the phone out with me so that I don't miss a call or a text.

Of course, one cannot have a phone making noise in a movie theatre or while sitting in church on Sunday morning. So during those times I turn the volume setting to "VIBRATE", and then I have to hold the phone in my hand the entire time, so that I can feel it if it vibrates.

When I got the phone I had to have the good folks at the AT&T store put extremely loud ring tones and incoming text tones on my phone, because it has to ring so loud that it will wake me out of a sound sleep. Whenever the bosses call or text, I have to respond immediately, whether it is in the daytime or in the middle of the night.

It sucks to pay $10 to see a movie, walk into the theatre, find a seat, and then 10 minutes into the movie, get a text saying that I have to leave immediately for Wenatchee (2 hours away) or Spokane (3 hours).

It also kind of sucks to drive half an hour to a neighboring town to hear a guest speaker (naturalist) give a presentation on Moose, or Honey Bees, or Squirrels, or whatever, then get called in the middle of the program and have to bolt like heck to get back to my town for the job. But it happens. A lot. But I guess its ok because I really need the additional income.

The one and only time I get a break from having to have the phone in my hand is when I am away on a photography trip. I think that one of the best things about wilderness photo trips is simply the relief that comes from not having to worry about the phone all the time.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

Tom, I can relate -- back in the early '90s my team and I had to be on call 24/7 and carried pagers, but once cell phones moved from being big "bricks" to being smaller bricks then we got "assigned" and on call!

Some situations were rather humorous, like getting calls for help from somewhere around the world at the oddest hours and having to rush to the center where we could have our global network running, or like the night when I was out with friends, relaxing and enjoying some nice "stuff", when I got a call from my boss who was having computer problems and I sat, relaxed but with a bit of a smile as I walked her through getting things straightened out!!:) :)
