Hey Alex, you've owned the Zeiss 55 as well? What are your thoughts between the two?
They're essentially two completely different lenses. If you need a lens that's sharp corner to corner at f/1.8 get the Zeiss. If you want a budget nifty fifty get the Sony. The Sony is literally the same 50mm design that's been used on SLRs since the 1960s just on a mirrorless mount.
The Zeiss is a modern version made to eliminate all the downsides of classic 50s.
So far haven't been let down by the FE 50, but I'm comparing it to all the lenses it's based on. Not a high end 50mm.
One thing I will say the little bump in compression from 50 to 55mm make the bokeh just a bit more pleasing on the Zeiss, the reason they went with 55mm and 1.8 was that it combats distortions and aberrations better. If it was a 50mm and f/1.2-1.4 it wouldn't be near as good as it is. A lot of people wondered why the uncommon focal length but manufactures were actually doing that in the beginning of the SLR age.
Back to the Sony FE 50mm, it's a budget lens and it gets the job done. The AF outdoors is great, slows down a bit indoors but that happens with any lens, even with the Zeiss. This was tested on a A7(single shot, non continuous), I have a A6000 just haven't had time to play with it on that one. Been busy as a bee lately, when I do I'll see how well it tracks. I don't actually ever need tracking, but I know some people do.
