I picked the 50D over the 60D, but I have some good reasons, and some not so good reasons to do so. Firstly I already had lots of batteries, it uses BP511's, and a BG-E2N battery grip from my 20D, not to mention a load of CF cards too. I have a gig doing product photogtaphy at an industrial location with lots of RFI, so I use the PC socket when the RF trigger is struggling. I also love the big rear wheel and Joystick control interface. I also like the Reble/xxxD interface.

The one on the 60D and later, and the 6D I find completly unintuative whenever I pick one of the cameras up in store. I also hate SD cards, I seem to be able to kill them with a single touch.

So taking the above into consideration I went with the 50D. If you had one of the earlier xxD bodies the consistency with the existing accessories can make it a good choice on a tight budget. I got my 50D two years ago, and it's working fine. But they are getting on a bit now. On the other hand that can make them even more of a bargan.

Oh I like the output from the 15MP 14 bit sensor a lot. It's a lot better than the older 12bit ones I was used to. Lots of high DR aviation shots from my 50D in my gallery images here on POTN as well as my Flickr if you want to see samples.

Additionally, the build of the 50D is better than the 60D. The 50D is somewhat larger and heavier than the 60D and is closer in size ro a 7D. It has a semi-professional build with a magnesium alloy body. The 60D dumbed down the build a bit to more of a consumer body, a few steps above the Rebels of that period. It was a smaller polycarbonate body and the separate joy stick and rear control wheel were replaced by the D-pad, which in the opinion of many was a downgrade. This was presumably done to push upgraders to the then new semi pro 7D and have a more appropriate upgrade path for Rebel (xxxD) users . The 60D had a number of new and more advanced features. like high def video, the articulating LCD, and an 18mp sensor with better low light performance, but it also lost some pro oriented features like the focus micro adjust (MFA).

it is the perfect starter camera, some advanced features like MFA if you want that, but solid and rugged and up for anything. Congrats!

Godox/Flashpoint r2 system, plus some canon stuff.

My issue with the 50D was when you pushed underexposures which produced some very poor color banding. Some 50Ds were worse than others though I believe.

I don't know about that, but I do find that sometimes I can push my 50D up quite a bit further than I expect to be able to.

ISO 12800 from one of my 50Ds and this wasn't underexposed. This was fairly prevalent though, but some 50Ds didn't seem to have this issue quite as badly.
