So, I am getting the 80d - upgrading from the 40d. Looks like my LR 4.4 and PS CS5 is not compatible. 80d requires the use of camera raw 9.5 and LR6.5. I only use PS by importing from LR to do cleaner cloning and HDR's. I use LR 99% of the time. Should i get the CC version so I have both programs? Or just get a stand alone version of LR? Will I still be able to import into PS CS5? I guess I just don't get the pros/cons of the 2 types.

You will still be able to open the images into CS5 from the new version of LR. The only restiction is having LR not ACR render the image. The only significant difference is the PSD or TIFF (which ever you choose to use) is created first by LR then opened in PS.

I have just typed all this then rememberd since LR4.4 you had to do it this way with CS5 anyway. The fix for PV2012 in the last version of ACR 6 stopped working with LR4.4 so if you go with the LR6.5 perpetual licence PSCS5 will work with it identically to the way LR4.4 works.

I can't speak for everyone else, but having just moved to a Mac today, I chose to go CC. The yearly cost is the same as the standalone program, plus you get PS. But that's how I look at it.

If I do the monthly subscription, and I decide to cancel, I can no longer edit photos. But, would I be able to buy a non-cc version and continue where I left off? Is it conceivable that Adobe would completely get rid of the non-CC version and force you to have a subscription in the future?

You would possibly not be able to use the CC library with the perpetual licence version of LR in the future, since Adobe changes the .lrcat format with each new major version of LR. Or has done so until now. I don't know what the situation is with .lrcat files and CC versions though. If you stop the subscription though LR doesn't completely stop working. You can no longer access the edit module to edit images, I'm not sure about importing new images to the catalogue, I don't think you can but could be wrong. You can still export images though, and at least the print module keeps working. I think the other output modules do too. They just stop you doing anything new. So not nearly as drastic as some people make it out to be.

instead of upgrading, can you use adobe's dng converter? that's what i was using to load raw files from review sites as well as sample raws posted from 80d users loading in ps cs6.

Yes. Try Adobe's DNG converter first. It is free and only takes a few minutes longer to convert into a DNG and then import into LR.
