What do you guys think? Should I keep the 5DMKII and buy the Sony A6000? Or just completely switch out? I read some good things about the Sony, however, having both cameras will be pretty $$$ with the lens. Anyone else have this combination?

What isn't your 5Dii doing for you? Any reason you are looking for a second body or to switch entirely?

The A6000 has been a welcome addition to my bag after switching over from a 6D/60D combo, and to be sure it is now my workhorse camera. I use it for events, short-range sports work and general personal work. I thought about changing over for not quite a year before I finally did, sorting out my wants and needs. I was leaving my Canon gear at home sometimes because I didn't want to carry a 4-5 lb camera/lens combo somewhere with or without two small kids in tow. Adding the A6000, I really have taken it just about everywhere because it is so small and it there is no IQ compromise and the AF is pretty amazing.

The adapters didn't focus track with my first-generation bodies, so keeping my Canon glass didn't make a lot of sense for me. People who have second-gen bodies are very happy with both the EF and A-mount adapters. I could use the a6000 for all the sports I shoot, but my A77ii/Minolta HS 200 2.8 combo gives me the performance I need. It is pretty much an A6000 in a DSLR body. If I were ok with F4, the FE 70-200 would be in my bag instead of the A-mount kit. At some point, maybe I will get the new 70-200 2.8 GM lens but for $3K they can keep it.

The A7R wouldn't be an acceptable only body for me, but it is great in a specialized role. A run and gun camera it is not, but when you need elite image quality, and you have time to use great technique, it produces elite results. With the LA-EA3 adapter, I can manually focus my 200 2.8 prime and do outdoor portrait work. I was unhappy with the LA-EA4 because it would steal IQ from my A7R to focus with the translucent mirror, but it seems that A7Rii owners don't voice this complaint much at all.

I love the α6000 for its ability to work with just about any lens, I like using old manual focus lenses with mine. I also like being able to take a lighter second camera with me.

If I could only have one camera it would be my DSLR, the α6000 is a great little camera and the newer α6300 with an AF adapter might work really well with Canon lenses.
My Panasonics autofocus really well with my Canon lenses that I have tried, my α6000 not so much.

I came from shooting Canon ( 5d2 and 7d ) and now mostly shoot with Sony mirror less ( A7R and A6000 ). Switched for a few reasons:

1. More pixels. I make large prints and could use those extra pixels.
2. More dynamic range. Shooting landscapes with the 5d2 resulted in using GND filters on over half of my images. That started to get tiring. With the A7R, this has been cut down to maybe 10% of my images require a GND filter.
3. Lighter outfit for travel. I take both cameras on my travels and the weight savings is significant. Not only are the two cameras lighter and less bulky than my 5d2, they share all the lenses, batteries, chargers, memory cards etc... Overall my travel kit reduced in weight by at least 1/3 compared to a DSLR and another system for street photos. When traveling, I take photos of both the landscapes as well as street images. Being able to take out my A7R in the morning for some landscapes and my A6000 in the evening for some street is just a joy. Both cameras excel for what I use them for.

I just switched to the a6000, I'd say a switch to the Sony system is ideal, but it depends on what you really want out of your camera. It may not perform as well with low light, or at high ISO's, but other than that I think it'll work out just fine for you. The video is beautiful, it's perfect for streets and it's small enough to take everywhere. If this is a hobby type thing I say go for it, if it's professional I'd upgrade to an a7 and just use my Canon lenses with the system.

Went from Canon to Sony and back to Canon. I had the A7S and A5100. The Sony system isn't mature yet. There aren't any cheap, wide aperture options yet, besides the 50 1.8 that isn't released yet. Adapted electronic lenses don't AF as well as natively, many older or third party lenses don't work, and sometimes the adapters crash. Startup time and responsiveness is pretty bad, and the buttons and dials are too small and feel flimsy (my A7S literally creaked when the back button AF was pressed). Weather sealing is worse than Canon. Battery life sucks. Sony support is worse than Canon's.

Yes, there are more AF points (which doesn't mean AF is faster), and better IQ, but a camera is much more than just the image and AF sensors, and to me a 7D is much more camera at the same price point as an A6000. Plus you will have interchangeable native lenses, batteries, and storage between it and your 5DII.

Canon 5DII - Canon 24-70 L 2.8

When using the Sony exclusively, there are a few things I miss, so I don't think I would be getting rid of all my Canon gears any time soon. Hence I'm still a hybrid user: Sony A7R II with a prime in one hand and Canon 5D MK III with one of my favorite Canon zooms on the other. I like both systems.

- I miss having the joystick that's on my Canon.
- I miss a reliable off-camera flash setup, but now that Godox is releasing the X1-S transmitter and the TT685S flash for Sony, things are starting to look better.
- I miss having 2.8 zooms, but that looks to be a non-issue now that Sony has released the 24-70 f/2.8 GM and the 70-200 f/2.8 GM is also coming.
- I miss the long battery life of my Canon 5D Mk III, but after a while, I learn to deal with having to switch out battery after every 250 shots.

When I travel, I only pack the Sony A7R II, Batis 25 and Batis 85.

Anyhow, if you're buying into the Sony systems, then do your research and know all the shortcomings of the system. One thing I would recommend is to skip the Metabones adapter and buy native lenses instead. You will be able to use all the focusing modes with native E-mount lenses.

Ok......

select the focal lengths you need both in zooms and primes. Then decide if Sony's line of lenses will work for your application. Make a note of the $$$ for each sony lens. Also look at the limited amount of fast primes and zooms. If your going to buy a metabone adapter disregard my comments.

I would personally buy native lenses but that's just my preference. I'd urge you to buy FE lenses so that when you decide to buy a Sony full frame A7 series the transition would be easy.

If your going to buy a sony I'd suggest buying the A6300. This way you can use the latest generation Metabone and have fast AF with a canon lens.

I've really considered the A6300. The 6300 would be my fun secondary system. My issue I have with Sony is the cost of all of the lenses I want for the crop sensor body :( The Sony Batis 25mm is aprox 1800 CDN after taxes. Sony has no offerings I want in that range. The 55 f/1.8 is more reasonably priced at 1149CDN. Even the slow 16-70 f/4 is 1200 CDN. This is where I'd rather spend more and buy an A7mk2.

This is where I bought a fuji as a small form factor "fun" stills camera and they have a decent range of fast glass in the $ grand range. I use my 5dmk3 & 5dmk2 alot with my 24Lmk2. The fuji 16mm f/1.4 IQ is superb for a crop sensor system. I'd question if the Sony A6300 w/ 16-70mm f/4 zoom (900usd) would have have better IQ than a Fuji 16mpx body with the 18-55 f/2.8-f/4 kit lens. I highly doubt you'd easily tell the difference.

I just suggest analyzing your exact needs in a system. It certainly sounds like your still searching for an ideal system. No such thing as ideal :)

the FE55 was available for $699USD last week, grey market most likely. I got mine like-new, US copy for $700USD in November.
