I've always found these birds quite exotic and finally got decent shots of both male and female at the San Pedro riparian area near Sierra Vista AZ. They are the same genus as the northern cardinal, so one might say they are the southern cardinal.

Ah, guess it's time for a new birding book. I was fortunate to see and capture these in Port A either last fall or springtime 2015. Created quite a stir among the birders because "they only venture into the USA here in extreme southern Texas". Obviously expanding their range.
All that being said, some good fortune there, Al, and well captured. Save these!
