Help I'm 6'5 and I'm having trouble finding a tripod I don't have band clear over to take a photo. Can someone recommend a taller tripod then 5'6 and that will hold my Canon with a Tamron 150-600.

Thanks

Steve

Since you didn't mention a price, the RRS TVC-34L (external link) is almost 5'9" high at fullest extension (no center column) before you add a head. Put on their BH-55 (external link) ballhead or their Pano-Gimbal 2 (external link) and you'll have something that can hold anything you can lift onto it, and get it to 6' or more off the ground. All for a mere $1500-$1700. But it'll stand up to your worst handling and heaviest gear.

I own this tripod, ballhead and Pano-Gimbal and I couldn't be happier. Is it expensive? Yes, RRS is expensive....... but if you use a tripod a lot, this one will put a smile on your face everytime you do.

Dear IAbowhunter,

I'm also 6' 5" tall so I'll offer my tripod choice just so you have something to use for comparison. I have a Benro A3580F and when using it with either my Canon 40D or Canon 1DMK2 on an L bracket with a Benro B-2 ballhead it is almost too tall for me to see into the viewfinder without having to tiptoe a bit with the center column completely lowered.

Regards.

Tim Murphy :-)

My Gitzo Tele-Studex-Giant goes to over 8', and the geared column probably adds another foot. It also supports a tremendous amount of weight. And fwiw, I typically put the camera/tripod height where it should be for the best photo, and more often than not, that doesn't always coincide with my personal height. Sometimes I have to bend over, sometimes I have to use a ladder.

My answer for most photography questions: "it depends...'

I understand the issue of physical comfort and not having to stoop all the time. However let me express that BEST COMPOSITION is often not found at our particular eye level! So examine different heights when composing, you just might find something better suited for the shot than our natural eye level. Remember that others are not as tall as we might be, and just might have a better view of things than we do.

A friend of mine is 6'7" tall and for years he has been using a Gitzo GT5541 (no center column) and found it more than adequate for height. However he recently sold it (as he no longer uses big lenses) and uses an old Gitzo G1327 Mk2 which he prefers due to it's lighter weight. He is a professional photographer so he does not care about the latest all singing all dancing tripods - just what works best.
Certainly at your height a tall tripod will be more comfortable, but will that height give the best shots/perspective? As others have suggested shorter is often better. I often use my Gitzo GT3320BS, very uncomfortable, but the lower perspective often gives more pleasing shots.

Whatever you decide on do not skimp, get a top quality tripod from Gitzo, RRS or similar as it is far cheaper in the long run - been there and wasted money!

Dear Board,

Here's what I question about the perspective posts.

What tripod available today cannot be reduced in height?

The OP is tall, the reasonable assumption is that he wants something he can look though at eye level. Why does everyone assume he isn't smart enough to look down when it's warranted?

In a perfect world all tripods would reach to eye level on 7 footers. Then they would be easy to buy.

Regards,

Tim Murphy :-)

I have a Manfrotto 475B with Sirui K40-X. I am only 6' tall but don't have to extend the legs fully or extend the center column to see through the viewfinder when standing on level ground. When fully extended I need a stool. So 6.5' shouldn't be a problem for it.That height really pays off on uneven ground or when I need to raise it up to eliminate mergers.

And yes, I have been known to lower it too. ;-)a

It's still available on Amazon, but it's been replaced by the R5412XL, which apparently isn't even listed on Amazon anymore.

I just recently purchased a Really Right Stuff TVC 34L with the BH55L ballhead and have so far been extremely impressed. I'm only 6', but bought the 34L for added length for uneven terrain situations and I have a growing interest in bird photography, so should that mature, I'll be able to shoot overhead without a lot bending if the need arises. I think I picked that trick up from bird photographer Glenn Bartley.

I think it's actually 5214XL (external link) but it doesn't seem be widely available outside of Europe/Asia ?

The R-4203L is indeed a fine tripod, I'm very glad i snagged mine on a sale!
