I can't believe that my second lexar card reader went kaput!!! So can anyone recommend me a good card reader other than Lexar? Preferably one that can read SD and CF, maybe future proof a bit with those new fangled XQD cards

I have a Transcend card reader, USB 3.0 CF and SD, model # TS-RDF8K. It was cheap and seems to work fine for me.

I have one of the Lexar "professional" card readers. Ironic, I know.... but I've had 4 other ones fail and this one has been going strong for 2 years now. It might just be the luck of the draw.......

I have a couple of the Lexar and never had a problem. Sorry to hear you haven't had a good experience with them.

You are aware that most Lexar card readers have a 2-year warranty? The downside is you supposedly need the receipt. Details are at

We all know that there are lots of counterfeit memory cards in the marketplace, but has anyone heard of counterfeit readers? Seems to be an large quantity of reports of Lexar issues lately.

I found this one that I just bought and it works quite well. I also had trouble with a Lexar card reader. This one seems to be quite fast compared to others I have had.

I have an old Transcend SD card reader which has always worked. I dropped it once shattering the case, but I snapped it back together and put some elastics around it. It still works fine. I also have two SD/CF readers, a Kingston and a Sandisk, never a problem.

A card reader is not something to worry much about. If one fails, buy another one or two.

I use a cheap nGear multi usb3.0 reader. It was $20 and I had the USB2.0 version before that. Never a problem. Don't see the point of the expensive ones to be honest.

It has both SD and Micro SD but only reads one at a time.

I bought two of these to replace a Lexar ($50) card reader that went south. Great price, works great.

Isn't the file transfer much, much slower, then?

I use a cheap USB (3.0) card reader, which costs less than $ 3 and works quite well.

The argument is whether it's best to tax the card slot as opposed to the USB port. Which will wear easier/faster. Myself, I only us the USB port for plugging in my Camranger.
