I got my 55-250 stm lens calibrated with my 70D. Some times, area inside red focus box is still blurry. Trying to see if you guys can guide me.

Focus point is on hand. When I zoomed in, it doesn't look like in focus.

From the same place, I took pics of planes going up from take off with same settings. They seem to be in focus.

Looks like motion blur to me. Try increasing the shutter speed, you have plenty of available light.

Yes on the hand you may well have motion blur. Also remember that the actual size of the AF point is bigger than the box seen in the VF. It probably grabbed focus on the printing on the boy's shirt not that hand, as his hand is much more likely to be moving about a lot. Some of the printing is within the indicated AF area anyway. I don't have a 70D, so don't know the AF options. However it seems to be suggesting that the AF point to the right of the boy is also registering as in focus, even though it is over the fence, which is obviously not in focus. Don't know what is going on there.

The AF system shouldn't have any issues grabbing the aircraft, it's likely to be at close to infinity, or at least out past the Hyperfocal distance. Also there is no other detail for the AF system to try to grab.

Looking at the whole image, the grass is maybe slightly better in focus a little in front of him, about where the ball is.
Why is impossible to tell. As suggested above, the AF point could have found some other contrast to focus on, or the hand could have been moving towards the camera and the camera estimated where it would be at time of exposure or...
Sometimes the system makes mistakes and isn't better than this.

Heya,

1/500s is not fast enough to eliminate motion blur. Arms/Legs will move greater arcs than the core body will, moving at the same rate, so you will need a shutter based on the limbs. Start around 1/800s or 1/1000s.

Focus is actually dead on. It's just motion blur.

Very best,

Hi Alan, Adam, Anders and Gary,
Thanks for the suggestions. I will take more pics during weekend with faster shutter speed and check it out. I also need to check with faster glass about focusing issues with 70d. Mine is already out of warranty. Canon made adjustments to focussing assembly and replaced viewfinder as a courtesy. If there are any issues with focusing, this is the time to work with Canon for me.

Thanks

Hi,
I have tried with 1/800 shutter speed. It is early in the day with clouds ended up using higher ISO's.
Pics looks better with faster shutter speed. I think, I need 1/1000 sec and depth of field also seems to very narrow.
I took pics of 4 year olds playing soccer with 1/400 shutter speed. They are also blurry. I am little surprised that we need that fast shutter speeds for even smaller kids. Thanks for all the help.

I am planning to take some indoor sports pics (karate). I think, I need faster glass than 55-250 stm lens in order to maintain 1/1000 shutter speed. I have sigma 17-50mm f2.8 lens. Not sure abou the reach. Wondering if 85mm or 100mm primes are going to help me in this situation.

Thanks.

Compared to the first shot you showed us, the depth of field will only change by your distance to the subject, as you were already shooting wide open, f/5.6 @ 250mm.

How much did you raise the ISO?

For indoor games you might need something faster, yes, but it all depends on the lighting inside the stadium. On a 70D don't be afraid to go as high as ISO 3,200 or more with some post processing.

I used auto ISO with Tv mode. I needed +EV with gloomy morning. Somehow, Camera meters for some bright areas around clouds. I used iso 1250. I will keep max iso 3200 during indoor sports. I might be fine with 17-50mm right? I can use 50mm with F2.8 and stay close to the ring.

Yah. It happens even 4 years old kids. We need at least 1/800 if not 1/1000 to prevent motion blur for moving kids. Other issue is filling subject with full focus box. I think my focus is going on to some other far away object which is also in the focus box sometimes.

No problem. What are the typical shutter speeds you are using.
