Came across this bird on the way home from work yesterday. At first I thought it was a Cooper's Hawk but looking closer I'm thinking broad winged. Pretty sure it is too small for a Redtail and the markings are different.

Having trouble inserting perched images from flickr. Not sure what happened but here is a perched image.

Adult Red-shouldered hawk. Black and white bars on the tail and wings, rufous barring on the underside. The juveniles of Broad-winged and Red-shouldered hawk look a lot alike.

Thanks, Beekeeper. I didn't notice it before but the perched image does show a slight streak of red on his shoulder. Looks like he/she was working the fence posts.... perching for a bit looking down at the grass. . . then moving on to the next one down the line and repeat.

Thanks. Wished the in-flight images were heading towards rather than going away from me. Also working at minimizing the noise using the 7D1 and EF200/f.28 combination. Seeing some improvement using suggestions from the forum here and purchased De-Noise 6 a while ago to help but have still have a long way to go. I am currently coupling my 70-200F4 or 200 F/2.8 with a Canon 1.4X to get a bit more reach but hope to have either a 100-400mm or 400 f/5.6 by the year's end.

I'd grab the 100-400mm version 2 or the 400mm5.6 prime.

It will probably be the latter of the two when the budget allows. Have some hefty commitments coming up in the next 18 months.

yeah save or sell (small chunk of kidney) for the 100-400ii.
400/5.6 is great but 100-400ii give so much more--like close focus/IS/etc.
